Copyright Laws In India

It is desirable to officially register your works with the Registrar of Copyrights in India.

Reasons to Register
here are two fundamental reasons to Register:

1) ability to sue; and
2) statutory damages.

Dangers of Non-Registration
To see how all of this plays out, assume that this Web page has not been registered. As we know, this page is in tangible form, and is therefore protected by copyright. If someone from The Plagiarism Website comes and copies this page verbatim and places it on that Website, then my copyright has been infringed. In order to sue The Plagiarism Website for copyright infringement, I would have to register this web page with the copyright office. If I was in a hurry to file the lawsuit,

RNCM Gamelan Weekend

Saturday 28 to Sunday 29 November
RNCM GAMELAN WEEKEND

This year the RNCM will be hosting one of the UK's largest festivals of Gamelan in over 10 years! Featuring the South Bank Gamelan Players, The Hallé, Wigan Instrumental Teaching Service, An introduction to Javanese puppetry, workshops, and much more.

Hailing from the islands of Java and Bali in modern-day Indonesia, a gamelan is a set of gongs and tuned percussion instruments made from bronze, wood and bamboo. To celebrate the arrival of the RNCM’s very own gamelan, this weekend features performances by some of the UK’s leading performance groups, embracing Javanese poetry, song, dance and puppetry alongside the music.

A number of Western pieces written in response to gamelan music offers a counterpoint to these performances, as does a strand of education project presentations featuring children from three North West music services.

And, why not have a go yourself? We’ve designed five public workshops for beginners of all ages and abilities and, as the music is taught by ear, with no need to read music, there’s little
to stop you?

Toby Smith, Geoffrey Reed - artistic directors.

For more information or to request a leaflet please contact the box office on 0161 907 5555 or for group bookers/schools please contact Jeni Hawkswell, Group's Co-ordinator for group discounts on 0161 907 5441.

Improvisational piano teacher in London

I've been pootling around on the piano for a couple of years, but I need a teacher. The trouble is, I'm looking for quite a specific thing. I don't read music, I'm interested in being able to play different genres of improvised music and accompaniments, to interpret what other musicians are playing and generally play around in pleasing ways. I'm looking to learn patterns and shapes that I can reuse and combine, to make my improvisations harmonically richer and more rhythmic.

Specific styles I'd like to grasp are:
* gospel piano
* pop piano (think Carole King, Randy Newman, Elton John)
* jazz ballads (I don't want to show off, I want to play Gershwin and Billie Holiday songs slowly and beautifully)
* ragtime piano (I harbour a secret dream to accompany Buster Keaton movies on the piano)

I practice and I'm very enthusiastic if taught well, and I have a genuine passion for making music. And I'm convinced there's someone out there who can really help me learn all this - whether it's a good teacher or a more advanced learner.

Any takers?

Musicians' social network with free sheet music

Just stumbled on 8Notes, a UK-based social network for musicians. You can upload your own music, share and download sheet music, and talk to other musicians via a lively forum.

They have a good-sized collection of not very printable musician jokes too. When I was learning classical violin many, many moons ago it was always viola jokes - from a quick glance round it looks like nothing much has changed...

The Black Cab Sessions

Just spotted Black Cab Sessions, a site where sometimes quite famous musicians play a song while riding around in the back of a taxi.

What else could be simplified by happening in the back of a taxi? Siestas, meetings, more?

How to play jazz piano

I was talking to my friend's piano teacher Roland Perrin (http://www.rolandperrin.com/) recently about how to play jazz piano, and one of the things he said was that jazz piano rhythms are basically two conventional rhythms layered on top of each other.

And I've also been following Shawn Cheek's "Easy Piano Lessons" on YouTube, and he says a similar thing about jazz chords, that he hears jazz chords as two chords layered on top of each other. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=MMXYdD7rDhc, about 1:30 in)

And having heard that, suddenly learning to play jazz piano doesn't seem so daunting. I wonder if there are any teachers out there who have developed a methodology based on this approach?
