The Importance of the sketchbook as a study tool

"Every art student is required to have a sketchbook: usually this is used primarily for homework, becoming another school book in the long list of homework subjects. However, throughout your art practice the sketchbook will become the artist's treasure trove, mostly only ever seen by the artist themselves. In this article I hope to show how the sketchbook is a significant reflective tool for creative development."

    Sample lesson plan

I plan my lessons to suit your specific needs. The attached plan was designed for a new writer who wanted:

    1. to develop an approach to plotting character development

    2. to get some experience in scene-setting

I took the student to a local church to have a go at capturing the sensual detail of the setting and translating it to the page. We did a couple of exercises together to establish which of the student's characters had the potential to develop most during the course of the novel and what the nature of the development would be.
