Ciara began her musical training in the County Cork School of Music studying flute with Conor O’ Connell. After completing an LTCL in flute performance in 2007 under the tutorage of Katrina Emtage in the Cork School of Music, she decided to change direction.

At the age of 19, Ciara took up oboe, studying with Sarah Burn and later with Matthew Manning. She has just completed her final year of a BMus degree in the CIT Cork School of Music studying oboe with Aisling Casey. She is currently studying at the Rotterdam Conservatoire with Aisling Casey and Maarten Dekkers.

Ciara has attended masterclasses with prestigious teachers such as Klaus Becker (Hochschule fur Musik und Theater, Hannover), Marc Schaeferdiek (Musikhochschule Koln), David Walter (Paris Conservatoire), Celia Nicklin (Royal Academy of Music, London), David Theodore (Royal College of Music, London) and Jo Lively (Trinity College of Music, London) among others.

Ciara has played with ensembles such as the RTE Concert Orchestra, Camerata Ireland, Codarts Symphony Orchestra - Rotterdam, International Youth Wind Orchestra, National Youth Symphony Orchestra of Ireland and Cork Symphony Orchestra as well as the many Cork School of Music orchestras and ensembles.

Ciara has also played concertos with DIT Baroque Orchestra and Monica Huggett in the National Gallery of Ireland and the Cork School of Music Baroque Orchestra. Ciara is a reserve player for the European Union Youth Orchestra. She has been awarded scholarships to prestigious summer schools such as Sewanne Music Festival Orchestra (USA), Domaine Forget Academie (Canada) and the International Youth Wind Orchestra (USA).

Ciara has been privileged to collaborate with composer John Gibson for the World Premiere of his work for Cor Anglais, Mezzo-Soprano and Piano “Lament for Oona” in the Crawford Art Gallery Cork in 2007.

This year, Ciara has been awarded a study scholarship from the London Philharmonia Orchestra and Martin Musical Scholarship. She has also won prizes that include the Music Teachers Association Bursary and the Crowley Cup at Feis Maitiu, Cork.

Most recently Ciara has played with Camerata Ireland for the re-opening of City Hall in Belfast, Codarts Symphony Orchestra for the re-opening of the concert hall "De Doelen" in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, a tour in the USA as part of the WASBE conference 2009 and the prestigious Clandeboye Festival in August 2009.

Ciara’s teaching experience spans many different age groups and ensembles. She is currently music teacher at Arnhem International School in the Netherlands. She studied music pedagogy and child psychology in the Cork School of Music from 2007-2009 and has taught in primary schools such as St. Joseph’s National School, Mardyke and the Cork School Project. She has taught as a substitute teacher of both musicianship classes and individual instrumental tuition in the Cork School of Music and County Cork VEC School of Music.

One-to-one instrumental tuition on flute, oboe and recorder from beginner upwards is available. Entry for grade examinations can be under either the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music or the Royal Irish Academy of Music. Preparation for the Junior and Leaving Certificate practical is included. This option may be particularly attractive to primary school students who wish to take up a musical instrument as part of their overall personal development.

One-to-one tuition in the academic aspects of music i.e. harmony, music history, aural training/ear tests, sight-singing, rudiments, improvisations, transposition and general musicianship is also available. This is particularly important to back up the instrumental tuition a student may be receiving. Entry for theoretical grade examinations can also be arranged.

The above aspects are particularly important for students who wish to study music as a subject for their Junior or Leaving Certificate yet the core subject of music in their chosen secondary school is not available. A fully comprehensive course work package is provided for both state examinations.

Supplemental musicianship classes are available in primary and secondary schools.

Tuition is provided at my music studio in Ballincurrig, Leamlara, Co. Cork where I have separate lounge facilities for parents to relax during their child’s lesson. Close liaison with parents is ongoing to ensure that their child is fully enjoying the experience and maximising their potential in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.
