Diana Slocombe
Teaching people how to sew and be able to make their own clothes or other fabric based projects gives me great pleasure.
Following my hobby, I took classes at the local college and gained a City and Guilds in Fashion. I really enjoyed learning about creating fashion and gained many new skills that I passed on to others in the local community education classes. Later, I completed a business degree and became a qualified teacher, which I loved. Now I want to go back to my hobby and give others the skills to enjoy a new practical and creative leisure interest.
I have called my business - Fun with Fabrics and Fashion, because that is exactly what I want my students to have.

Two day Sewing Fest
Use this workshops to immerse yourself in basic dressmaking or if you have some knowledge increase your skills and improve the finish of your work.
If you have never sewn before, no problem, in two days I can show you more than just the basics so that you will be able to tackle other projects in the future with some skill and confidence.
Bring your own machine, so that you will also learn how to use its facilities. Like any other craft dressmaking is about how to use your tools well and for the majority the sewing machine is the main tool. You wil also need a basic sewing kit - scissors, needles, pins and lots of enthusiam.
And if you have some knowledge of dressmaking fine, decide how you want to extend your skills and what you want to create, just keep it reasonable for the time we shall have - I believe the key to most projects is confidence through completion and understanding your own abilities.
This will be a very small group to allow lots of guidance and encouragement.
Make a Skirt in a Day
Using a commercial paper pattern we shall either make a classic straight skirt if you some knowledge i.e. basic seaming and inserting a zip; or if you are very new to dressmaking then we shall make an 'A'line skirt.
All you need to bring with you are a) your sewing machine and b) fabric to make your skirt with thread, zip and lining if you wish.
This will be an intensive day but hopefully lots of fun with others of similar interests which we can explore better as we enjoy lunch and work together.
Loving your Sewing Machine
Many have a sewing machine that they have not used for ages or perhaps inherited one but have no idea of how to use it.
This one day course will show you the possibilities of your sewing machine, bring it with you and I will show you how to do the basic maintenance, explain the terrible word -tension and make it clear.
We shall also look at threads and needles and the various tricks to make the machine do what you intend in other words 'fall in love with its possibilities'
You will learn how to control the speed via the foot control and the flywheel. Then we shall look at the various types of stitches, starting with the basics of straight and zig-zag before moving into the area of the specialist feet. Here we shall do zips, buttonholes, piping and inserting lace.
I expect this to be a fun day with similar people who are ready to laugh with and encourage each other in an area many have found as clear as mud in the past. We shall also enjoy a nice lunch and relax before tackling a small project to gain confidence.
Fun with Fabrics and Fashion
For those new to dressmaking I start with the very basics: taking body measurements and adapting commercial paper patterns, then move on to cutting out the garment, followed up with basic seaming and finishes, zips, facings and hems.
As students become more able and confident I shall move on to develop the skills necessary for their particular project.

THE SMALL PRINT
I am very flexible in offering the learning to students, either:
a) teach the groups in 6 weeks series of lessons which I find sufficent to complete a garment whilst keeping the enthusiam high.
b) one or two courses on a specific skill
c) one-to-one lesson sin the studnets own home.
