HUGH STEWART
Guitar and Singing tutor
Hello. I am a qualified teacher. I used to teach Business Studies and Economics but have been working on my own for 5 years, singing in pubs and festvals and teaching guitar/bass. I work at our home address in Belper, near Derby, so you'ld have to come here. I use the Rockschool series of books for both bass and guitar and encourage students to read music too.
In my acoustic band I usually play the banjo or mandolin, so can teach those as well.

FAQ
Do you teach adults too?
Yes, I have several adults who attend after work. Some in fact, working shifts, are able to see me in mornings or afternoons. Like my younger students, they need to make space in their lives for practicing, so busy people must give a bit of priority to the great enjoyment and satisfaction the can feel once they have mastered a tune.
Do I need to read music to play the guitar?
No, but I consider it a very good idea.
It depends on your ambitions for the instrument. If you aim to be a professional session guitarist/bassist, then you need to study the grades up to grade 8 and work on your reading skills as you go along. If you become a competant player and reader, you will be in demand by producers of albums or stage shows.
On the other hand, most guitarists who are songwiters get along by strumming chords. These chord fingerings can be learned and performed perfectly well without the need to read musical notation.
Should I learn on an electric or acoustic?
It really depends on what style of music you want to play. If you want to front a rock band, then a nylon strung classical guitar is not much use to you. However if you want to sing, using the guitar as accompanyment, then one of the 2 acoustic styles is a possibility.
Nylon-strung guitars are normally finger-picked, while the steel strung acoustic is usually strummed with a plectrum.
Can I buy a small size guitar for a child?
Yes. For both electric and acoustic guitars, 3/4 or half sizes are available. The small "Spanish" style nylon-strung instruments I have seen give a reasonable tone, but the steel strung offerings are sometimes not very pleasant. Small electric guitars are also available now, made by the top manufacturers. They are quite good, but you need an Amp.
How much should I spend on an instrument?
You do not need to spend a fortune on a reasonable guitar; prices are low these days - even £100 can get you a decent instrument, though it is probably worth while spending a bit more, up to £150.
Don't forget if you want to learn Rock guitar or bass, you will need an Amp as well. Most music shops will offer a starter's package with everything you need in one box. They are good value.

1 to 1 tuition available, to help get you throught exams.
THE SMALL PRINT
Most students benefit from half-hour lessons, hence the price wold be £10 per lesson. Once a week will do: you must practice in between lessons. It would also help you to buy a suitable tutor book ( please discuss this with me first) as well as the Rock schooll grade book, if you want to take the exam.
