Growing up on the Amiga Demoscene, Ian first used Unix in 1993 as a teenage hacker but it wasn't until 1995 that he installed Slackware Linux on his first PC (after his beloved A1200/030 had been confiscated by Cardif CID).

Since then he's built and run reliable networks for a wide variety of commercial and community projects. His day job is running a Network consultancy in Shoreditch providing mission critical infrastructure to the local creative industries.

As a founder of the University of Openness Ian ran FacultyUnix, a 2 hour weekly workshop taking place at Limehouse townhall. There he taught a variety of students the how and why of unix, helping them to run their own servers and develop their craft.

Group Classes

Free Beginners Unix Workshops

Learn the mysterious ways of the Unix in the cavernous HQ of Darq#. Over six weeks you'll learn what a Unix is, why you would want one and how it likes to be tickled.

Using FreeBSD & OpenSolaris we'll show you how to disregard the graphical interface, and do what you need from the command line.

You will need:

* A laptop that works with some free hard disk space
* A notebook and pen (which you'll use a diary)
* Curiosity
* To promise to attend for 6 weeks

You will learn:

* Semantics of the command line
* How to smoke a (unix) pipe
* That everything is a file
* How to slice, dice and throw away mice

Places are limited, so please send an email to info@darq.com with "Unix Workshops" in the subject and a brief introduction.

Unix Networking Workshops in Shoreditch

Update: There's been quite a bit of interest, so these workshops are going ahead now, see above for details.

At this stage I'm just trying to gauge interest, but these will essentially be Free workshops aimed at people that use computers and want to understand how they work or why theirs has stopped working.

We'll explore TCP/IP (Internet style) networks using FreeBSD and OpenSolaris, two free operating systems with great legacies. You'll start off learning the different parts that make up the system, but in a surprisingly short amount of time you'll be able to diagnose network problems, keep things running smoothly and use your skills to attract sex partners from all around the world.

If you're interested (in unix/networks, not casual sex) please email info@darq.com with "Unix workshops" and a swearword of your choice in the subject. I'll add you to our list and when there's enough of you we can workout when might be a good night.
