I'm an enthusiastic and experienced teacher with formal training and 7 years of classroom experience. I regularly volunteer teaching knitting and am confident to an advanced level.

I can teach you to knit from scratch and will help you develop your confidence and love of textiles, enabling you to make the projects you want and even design your own.

Let me help you solve your knitting problems! Bring along projects you need help with, however much of a mess they may be in.

Making textiles plays a key role in my life, I regularly volunteer at knitting events in London and have just completed a two month long internship learning about traditional Thai weaving in Thailand. There I also taught young refugees and girls who were victims of human trafficking to knit as a way to build confidence and relax, as well as engaging with their textile heritage through creating their own pieces. I'm dedicated to sharing the joys of knitting with the world! Let me show you how!

Experience

Textiles internship

During the course of this two month internship in Chiang Mai, Thailand I worked at Studio Naenna with Patricia Cheeseman, a globally renowned expert in Thai and Lao textiles and professor. I learnt how to prepare traditional indigo dye from plants, how to weave using a backstrap loom and gained insight into weaving traditions in Thailand.

Knitting teaching

I have experience of teaching over 100 people how to knit. I regularly volunteer teaching the basics of how to knit, I have taught individuals and small groups as well as running several intensive short courses for groups of up to 25 students.

In Thailand I ran a two day workshop in October 2010 teaching young refugees how to knit to provide them with a potential source of income, form of relaxation and to enable them to make clothes for themselves and their children. I taught the participants how to cast on, cast off, knit, purl, increase, decrease, read English patterns and access ravelry.com to enable them to continue learning. The students made hats and baby booties. I also set up online resources to enable the students to continue their own learning and contact me to facilitate their development upon my return to the UK.

I also ran a day long workshop at a refuge for girls who were victims of human trafficking where I taught the girls how to cast on, knit, purl and cast off, making fingerless gloves as the project for the group. the aim of the workshop was to help the girls relax, build self esteem and a sense of achievement through the successful creation of a knitted item and to help them bond as a group through teaching and supporting each other.
