Jesse Morgan

guitar tutor

Idle hands are the devil's playground- I've been playing guitar for about 10 years now to essentially keep my hands busy. I'm more of a rhythm guitarist than lead, so don't expect much in the way of blazing solos and such. I can cover electric or acoustic guitars, depending our your preference, and mainly stick to various forms of rock (and some johnny cash).

Guitar Care

Hendrix set his on fire. Eddie used a drill on his. Kurt smashed his repeatedly. The difference between you and them is they had a closet full of spare guitars.

Taking good care of your guitar is about more than not smashing it. There are many tips and tricks you can go through to help extend the life of your guitar and get the best sound out of it.

Guitar Tuning

While quite simple, a well tuned guitar is essential to developing a good ear and hence needs to be properly learned. Tuning by ear can take years to master (depending on the musician) so I'll mainly cover different tunings and how to properly use a tuner as well as by ear.

FAQ

How much are classes?

Most of my classes are 1/2 an hour long and the rate is negotiable. I'm mainly teaching to bring in extra income so I can buy my son something nice for his birthday as well as supplement my equipment. Going rate for this area is $20/half hour. I try not to do more than 2 sessions back to back to prevent hand cramping, especially with new students.

If you're really interested in learning, contact me and we'll see if we can't work something out.

What type of guitarist are you?

This is a bit of a loaded question-
* from a musical taste perspective, the short answer is rock, the long answer is classic, 90's, blues, alternative, modern, progressive and what the hell some Johnny Cash as well.
* from a skill perspective, I'm a rhythm guitarist. my fingers aren't fast or nimble enough to play a Dave Mustane solo, but given enough practice I may eventually get there.
* from a style perspective, mostly modern and acoustic rock with a touch of blues rock. I look up to SRV and John Lee Hooker, but end up much less talented.

What are your qualifications?

Well, I took a music theory class in college, was in band in middle school (drums), and once read "How to Play Guitar in 24 Hours."

ok, so I made that last one up. In truth I've been playing since 1998 on and off and have tutored several different students over the years. I found School of Everything about 2 weeks into tutoring a friend, both of which happened to coincide with my Obsession cycle (I hyper focus on one of my hobbies for 3-6 months).

As such I've been reading quite a bit on teaching guitar as well as finding tools for ear training. I'll be the first to admit I'm not the greatest teacher, but I have something to offer someone who's interested in learning but feels too intimidated to go to a regular instructor.

THE SMALL PRINT

I reserve the right to be a jerk, but will do my best not to act like a jerk. I make no guarantees of my skills. All sales/classes are final. Sessions missed without 24 hour notice will still be charged and payment will be due up front before the next class. I will do my best to provide you the same courtesy.

I reserve the right to refuse sessions to anyone for any reason (especially if you smell- seriously). You must provide your own guitar (electric or acoustic). Location TBD, depending on student.
