Freedom Personal Safety is a social enterprise run by self defence specialists Elaine Howard and Julie Tweedale. We teach a self defence course for women which is designed to help every woman understand how she can defend herself against attack. We focus on what women can do not what they can't. The course is a combination of discussion, advice and simple physical techniques. Our course is fun, informal and accessible and will provide you with a valuable life skill.
We welcome all women, regardless of age, ability or fitness level. The techniques we teach are simple but effective and our course is not martial arts. Each session lasts 3 or 4 hours and includes discussion, tips and advice and physical techniques.
Many women like to participate with a friend so they can share the experience and practice techniques together after the class (though this is not a requirement).
Every woman who completes the course is given a lifetime practice guarantee which means she can attend any future courses to practice techniques free of charge.
We also run workshops, taster sessions and personal safety talks for all groups.
"A policeman once told me, that as a pensioner, it was safer if I didn't go out in the evenings. The course helped me realise that I can go to the theatre and visit friends and do not need to be a prisoner." (Joan, 66)
"I used to carry a rape alarm to keep me safe but now I can protect myself using my own body. It's a great feeling" (Michelle, 35)
"My mum sent me on this course before I went to Uni. I thought it was a bit of a waste of time but it was really empowering and made me think about some of the risks I'd taken when I'd been out with my friends" (Gita, 19)
Basic Physical Defence Instructor training
I am an accredited instructor with the RAD organisation in the United States. RAD is the leading self defence network in the US and Canada and myself and my colleague Elaine Howard are bringing our skills and expertise to the UK.
We have taught to different community groups (older women, young mothers, youth clubs etc.), particuarly those in high crime areas. We have been awarded grants by UNLTD, Grassroots Fund and Community Champions to help reduce fear of crime and develop life skills.
