Kirsty E Smith
Hello I’m Kirsty.
I have been making things and working with textiles since I was a child. I learnt how to make felt 14 years ago. I returned to university as a mature student and graduated in 2006 with a 1st Class Degree in Contemporary Crafts.
In April 2007 I set up www.allsensesart.com to provide workshops in all types of feltmaking, textiles and mixed media sculpture.
I am based in Lichfield, Staffordshire.UK
Felt is the oldest known man-made fabric. Felting is the process whereby wool fibres are transformed into exciting fabrics and 3D forms. Only wool, soap, water and some rubbbing is required for this magical process.
My mission is to, "Nurture and encourage people’s imaginations and creativity in a fun and enthusiastic way".
I believe that everyone, whatever their age or abilities, should have the opportunity to learn a new skill and have a chance to create something completely unique.
Recent feedback:
"A huge thank-you to you for making the workshop such a success and to say that it was wonderful to see even very small children really engaged and getting wonderful results that could easily have been produced by adults (I know I was thrilled with the piece I made!"
Lin Osborne Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery
I have worked with a range of people including young people in mental health wards, adults with mental health problems, children with physical disabilities and special needs and various family groups.
I work in art galleries, libraries, schools, community centres and in people’s own homes for Childrens Craft Birthday Parties.
I have received training from: Working Parts Disability Arts (Wolverhampton), Creative Partnerships (Derby) and Playtrain (Birmingham).
My specialism is textural felting where unusual fabrics are trapped into the wool fibres during the felting process. Some fantastic textures can be achieved.
More feedback:
"Absolutely fantastic! Kirsty makes something that looks so difficult and expensive so easy to do. Brilliant for all ages and she takes time to explain every step of the way."
Julie Abbotts, participant at Bilston Craft Gallery
I also make and exhibit my own mixed media sculptures. See other website www.frillipmoolog.co.uk for these.

(Exhibition continues until 10th April 2010 Wolverhampton Art Gallery.)Jann Haworth's sculpted donuts are a recurring theme in her work. In 2008 Wolverhampton Art Gallery acquired the piece, "Donuts, coffee cups & comics", for their Pop art collection.
During the day Kirsty teaches various felting techniques and shows her students how to make their own felted coffee cup, saucer and doughnut.
Learn 3D feltmaking techniques; enclose a china cup in merino wool fibres and wet felt. Learn the secrets of textural felting and how to trap interesting fabrics and threads into the surface of your own handmade felt. And finally make your own delicious and non fattening and felted doughnut!
There are 8 places for adults on this course. Some techniques are advanced however no prior experience of feltmaking is required.
This course is an ideal Corporate Enrichment Day activity or for a Special Birthday Party, a Fun Craft for Adults and for Embroiderers' Guild Workshops.
