I have been a practicing professional artist since graduating in Fine Art in 1991 working mainly as a landscape painter but also in portraiture, figurative art and abstract painting. I graduated as a Master of Fine Art in 1999. As a practicing artist I run a studio and exhibit regularly, mainly in the North of England but also at times in London, Edinburgh and the USA. Part of my work is to propose and execute art residencies with organisations as diverse as building societies, community residents associations and land based conservation organisations. I have been teaching adults since 1992 when I became the first artists in residence at Natural England. Since then I have taught for Newcastle University and currently teach for Sunderland University in their adult education department. I have taught art for Higham Hall Residential College in the Lake District since 2004 and also teach for Alston Hall College, Preston.
I worked as a naval architect and shipbuilding production manager from 1981 to 1987.
I run workshops and demonstrations for all kinds of groups and organisations ranging from amateur art societies to commercial companies. In 2008 I started an art holiday company from my new studio in the North Pennines called Pennine Painting Art Holidays. The well-lit studio overlooks the grouse moors of South Tynedale near Cross Fell the highest peak in the Pennines. The Pennine Way goes past the studio door as does the C2C national cycle route. Apart from that there is only farm traffic as Garrigill is not on a through road. I run this with my wife who does much of the behind the scenes work including baking excellent cakes and biscuits for coffee/tea breaks. I have built a carefully designed art teaching studio with a small attached gallery. Courses offered include landscape, abstract painting, still life and occasionally portraiture.
The local landscapes of Upper Teesdale, Upper Tynedale, Allendale and Weardale are very beautiful (North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and Moorhouse National Nature Reserve) with vast grouse moors, wooded limestone valleys and many waterfalls small and large (High Force being the biggest about 25 minutes from the studio). Landscape courses usually involve walking or driving from the studio for half a day's sketching and working the resulting drawings and photographs into paintings in various media. I offer bespoke demonstrations, exercises at all levels of ability, one to one tuition, group discussion and a slide talk all in a very relaxed atmosphere. The courses are not medium specific and I offer basic materials including oils, acrylics, watercolour, gouache, brushes, pastels, ink, pencils, charcoal plus papers. Box canvases and primed boards can be purchased at very reasonable prices.
