Experience
Holistic Massage & Ayurvedic advice + yoga background
I trained in the mid-80's with Velta Snikere-Wilson and a few years later qualified with the British Wheel of Yoga. I gained further knowledge of Yoga, Ayurveda & Tantra through the great teaching of Robert Svoboda, whose lectures I have attended for 10 years; and also from Acharya Shivanand Jee for learning certain hindu practices. For 20 years I have been teaching people of all ages and ability including weekly classes at Wormwood Scrubs Prison for 4 years. My work with inmates serving life sentences has enriched my teaching greatly and made me aware of the positive application of yoga in the life of an individual.
In 1992 I trained as a holistic massage therapist (M.T.I dipl.) and in 2005 in Ayurvedic massage (Abhyanga) with Atreya Smith from the European Institute of Vedic Studies. In 1995 I developed a great interest in Ayurveda and since then I have studied and attended regular lectures by Dr Vasant Lad and Dr Robert Svoboda and completed in 1996 a certificate of ayurvedic studies from the Ayurvedic Institute of New Mexico. This ancient art of living has influenced my work in both Yoga and massage and made me realize that healing and positive changes can only take place when the individual is aligned with the law of Nature. I have since developed a great interest in Tantra, Jyotish and Alchemy, and continue a on-going spiritual development with my teachers in India

FAQ
I am pregnant, is there anything I should not do?
Always tell your teacher if you are pregnant, wether it is the first few weeks or several months..
The first 3 months are crucial to ensure that you will not encourage a miscarriage, so usually it is best not to work too hard and respect your limitations or feelings on that day.. Sun Salutation should be practiced slowly with variations.
As a rule during the whole pregnancy do not do KAPALABHATI or BASTRIKA (forceful fire breath), and never hold your breath more than 2-4 seconds as the foetus needs a constant flow of oxygen. Gentle pranayama is ok, and so is nadhi sodhana with no specific ratio.
As for asanas, most of them are fine but you will notice that as you get bigger a lot of the backward bends & twists become difficult. Do ask your teacher about advice. You may find that once your reach 30 weeks+ you might benefit more by going to a specialized "Yoga Pregnancy class" where your needs will be better catered than in a general class.. Saying this over my 20 years of teaching I have had from time to time some pregnant women who stayed in the general class throughout, but they knew their body very well and ajusted accordingly.
I am a complete beginner, can I fit in the general classes?
Yes! Unless you have a specific medical condition or ailment you will be able to join the general classes.
The way I teach helps you to acknowledge your own body constitution and limitations, therefore working to your own body ability.
By "listening" to the sensations and breathing pattern during your practice you become your own teacher.
Each class is usually adapted to the level of the students, the general "mood" of the class and teacher, and the season of the year.
As we are all unique, we progress at a different pace, depending on our interest, ability and karmic path. It is worth remembering that only REGULAR practice will give you benefits and direction along your path.
Always let the teacher know that you are a beginner and feel free to ask any questions before or after the class. You may also contact Marianne either by phone or email for further information & advice.
