Having spent his childhood in Nigeria, it’s not surprising that Matt developed a love and natural talent for rhythms. Moving back to the UK in the early 80s brought with it new influences from The Police’s Stuart Copeland to Public Enemy’s unmistakable sound. From these formative beginnings Matt has forged a career as one half of electronic music duo Dark Globe, under which guise he’s enjoyed underground acclaim and Top 40 success.
Entirely self-taught, Matt began his music career by setting up and running a profitable independent dance label, releasing Dark Globe’s early output and experiments on Belgium’s infamous techno label R&S records, (home at the time to Aphex Twin, CJ Bolland & Joey Beltram), before being picked up and signed to Leftfield’s Hard Hands imprint. Since then Dark Globe have released records on U.K breaks stalwarts Whole 9 Yards, major player Island Records, and now call worldwide dance label Global Underground their home.
Outside of Dark Globe, Matt’s production and programming credits include Athlete, Peter Gabriel, Robbie Williams, Boy George, Eve Gallagher, Amanda Ghost, Deadly Avenger and Liquid amongst others. On the remix front, the artists he’s reworked include Bush, Orbital, Republica, William Orbit, Frou Frou, Farley & Heller, Bomb The Bass, Soundclash Republic, Sia, Two Lone Swordsman, Meat Katie and, most recently, Traffik.
Further achievements include providing the music for the Tomb Raider film trailer, claiming the No.1 spot in Music Week’s Upfront Chart twice in a row, creating the soundtrack for Versace’s Autumn 2000 catwalk show and performing live from Miami on Pete Tong’s Radio One Essential Mix.
Following on from last year’s ‘Nostalgia For The Future’ released on Global Underground, Matt is currently working on Dark Globe’s third album and DJ-ing on the label’s world tour. Keep up with his movements via the websites below…
