Michael Bettney

I am a practising graphic designer with 20 years professional experience working within studio/agency environments holding the posts of senior designer to design director. Working from my home studio in Castleford near Leeds I work as a freelance designer/ art director providing creative services to commercial businesses as well as a creative resource to other design companies. My skills cover a varied range of disciplines including design for print, brand development, advertising, direct mail, point of sale, web graphics and digital illustration. I am passionate about design and creativity as an whole and have had first-hand experience in how technology has revolutionised both the creative industry and the teaching of creative disciplines at higher education level. As for myself I have worked on the Macintosh platform since the early 90's and have extensive experience in the real-world use of Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop and Quark Xpress as well as many other related applications.

I am laid back in my approach, friendly and my experience within the commercial world has taught me the value of patience and the ability to try and keep a sense of humour in most situations. As a practising designer I also realise the importance in demonstrating how skills can be applied to real-life situations.

In my roles of studio and design manager I have been responsible for devising and implementing training programs for members of staff covering varying skill levels. I have also taught part-time, 2nd year students on The BTEC Diploma course in Graphic Design at the Leeds College of Art and individual students from complete beginners to students starting out on HND and degree courses as well as working professionals who want to update specific skills. In addition to the practical computer skills, I also provide guidance on professional practice within the design industry.

Whatever your requirements, tuition can be tailored to suit all levels from complete beginners to the more experienced, at a pace to suit you. Tuition content is flexible and can be focussed on your particular needs. The first introductory session will be to find out your specific training needs and look at your current skill levels allowing me to devise a training plan thats tailor-made to you. If you are a student I can provide guidance on working through specific modules contained within your course.

Tuition takes place at my studio but I also provide basic online support as part of the overall package.
