SARAH STUART
Percussion teacher
Sarah is a freelance percussionist based in Manchester. She has worked with several top UK orchestras, including The Hallé Orchestra, Southbank Sinfonia, and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenement. Apart from playing in many major UK concert venues she has toured with the NEO to Switzerland, and also performed as a marimba soloist with the orchestra at the Salzburg Festival this summer.
She graduated with a First Class Honours degree from the ‘Joint Course’ between the University of Manchester and the RNCM in 2005. Subsequently, in June 2007, she achieved a distinction for her Postgraduate Diploma in Performance at the RNCM, where she was taught percussion by Ian Wright, Paul Patrick, Elizabeth Gilliver and Dave Hassell.
In June 2007 Sarah was one of only three students to be awarded an RNCM Gold Medal for solo performance, adding to other successes including winning the Gilbert Webster Prize for Percussion (2005) and being a finalist in the RNCM Concerto Auditions (2006) and the Proctor Gregg Recital Prize (2005).
Sarah is also a committed performer of folk music and in 2006 broke new ground by being the first RNCM student to undertake major studies in folk music, studying Scottish Fiddle under Catriona Macdonald as a second study to Percussion. She currently plays fiddle for contemporary folk ensemble The Maerlock, who are widely recognised for their creativity and innovation.
In addition to her performing career, Sarah is committed to teaching music. She holds peripatetic posts at schools in Altrincham (Cheshire) and Lancaster, and is also experienced as a workshop leader in various contexts.
