I am a musician through and through, passionate about my subject and helping others achieve enjoyment and success in their music-making. This translates directly in my teaching as I believe strongly that to achieve success in learning an instrument there must be an element of enjoyment in order to motivate practice and progress. I have an advanced level of musicianship that gives a confidence in my knowledge of music and a passion for helping others enjoy their own musical experiences.
I have been teaching piano and flute, with some music theory where required, privately, for six years with a Music Degree and a wide musical experience. Over the six years I have had a 100% pass rate in the ABRSM grades on the piano with many of my students achieving merits or higher in both the classical piano exams and the jazz syllabus. I have also had experience teaching whole classes at KS3 and KS4 level.
I teach in a relaxed and friendly way. I concentrate on making music before technicalities such as scales/arpeggios (although they are introduced later). I love to use composition as a tool to help students learn the basics of the instrument : this has been very successful in the past with students feeling confident and proud when they are able to play a piece of music that they have created (with a little guidance). I have high standards and, though relaxed, I expect practice to be done and good results in grade examinations to be attained. For the more advanced student it is important to me that a high standard of performance is achieved - even in grade pieces! I believe that the only way to achieve the highest marks in piano or flute (including practice!) is to perform the pieces with expression and the passion for music that the student should have.
