Spanish Tutor/Teacher
Having studied Spanish to A Level along with English and Psychology , I pursued my passion for the language by spending 4 months in a language school in Ecuador and travelling around South America. This trip inspired me to return to Central America in my university holidays where my grasp of the language became invaluable as an independent traveller. I have since spent time in Madrid, Malaga and Seville and have taught a range of students with different learning abilities and objectives.
The spirit of language learning can often be dampened at school through rigid syllabi and seemingly endless grammar and vocab lists. Whilst for many students, the short term goal is understandably to get through an exam, this can often cloud other reasons for choosing to learn the language and thus sap them of their motivation. Whilst I do not underestimate the importance of grammar, I also like to mix in discussions of Latin American topics and Spanish culture in order to bring the subject to life and remind each student of the longer term benefits of learning a new language.
Many students fall behind in learning a language due to a lack of confidence. One on one tuition removes the fear of humiliation frequently witnessed in a classroom environment. I encourage my tutees that instead of being afraid of making mistakes, they should view errors as a key part of the learning process. I subsequently make sessions as interactive as possible and once tutees reach a certain level, I encourage Spanish speaking as much as possible with English only to be used occasionally.
Language learning should be a fun and stimulating process so I like to mix up the way of teaching to keep classes interesting and tutees motivated. Lessons might involve a combination of walking around the room pointing out and naming objects, watching and later analysing a short Spanish video or perfecting verb tenses. My goal is to inspire each student in the vivaciousness of the Spanish language, build their confidence as a Spanish speaker and help them achieve their academic or business objectives.
