Mindfulness For Stress

MBSR was established by Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn, a scientist at the University of Massachusetts Medical Centre. After practicing meditation for many years he wanted to offer its benefits in an accessible way to patients with stress, pain and illness. He believed that by learning to stay present with their situation, in an accepting and kind way, this might alleviate their suffering.

The Center for Mindfulness was set up at the university, and Kabat-Zinn and his colleagues developed a structured 8-week programme that uses mindfulness in an approach that focuses on alleviating pain and on improving physical and emotional well-being for individuals suffering from stress, anxiety, depression, chronic pain and alleviatating stress related to medical conditions as well as stress related to everyday life.

This was called Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction, through practice the mind is taught to pay attention to the present. Not worrying about the past or future as much can help increase acceptance and decrease stress. Participants have stated that they feel less judgmental and critical of themselves and subsequently toward others.

Over the years the MBSR programme has been taught to thousands of people in medical centres all over the world. Since 1979 there has been a tremendous amount of research into how this approach is helpful and how it not only works, but how it actually can change our brains for the better.

I offer one to one sessions helping you learn the MBSR approach to work towards reducing your stress.
