Mikao Usui, the founder of Reiki, brought to us the Reiki Precepts and described Reiki as a mental and spiritual improving aid. Using these precepts as a 'how to live' will help us understand; Healing your own spirit is paramount. It is true to say that to heal the physical you must first heal the mental/emotional cause. A copy of the original Japanese Kanji and the literal translation are available at the link above.
The Reiki precepts teaches us:
"No matter what happened do not get angry". With this precept, it is teaching us control over our emotions; when acting in anger we are not being mindful. As humans we are emotional beings. It is impossible for us not to experience anger at some point. The secret here is to not react in anger, but to take yourself out of the situation and to seek the cause of your anger. You will then have time to reason with yourself and act in a mindful way.
"Do not worry, just thank for everything". I always find that, if you are grateful for what you have then you will focus less on what you don’t have, therefore less reason to worry!
"Work diligently". By being diligent in all that we pursue, our spiritual selves will grow.
"Be kind to people". By having love and compassion in our hearts and sharing this, we will experience love and compassion from all those that we interact with.
"Every morning and evening put your hands together and read the rhyme". This is a time when we will truly discover that filling our hearts with compassion and love on a daily basis will show us a greater understanding. We will relate our day to the precepts and discover how each of the Reiki precepts links to one another. We sit in contemplation of the Reiki precepts and what they mean to us, deepening our understanding of ourselves and others we meet. We learn the true meaning of gratitude.
