New investment for School of Everything!

We're very pleased to announce a new round of investment for School of Everything.

Tim Jackson, founder of QXL.com and LendAround, has become an investor and joined the board of the company. Channel 4 has followed up its initial investment through its new innovation fund 4iP and Sean Park and Geoff Mulgan join existing investors Rocco Pellegrinelli and the Young Foundation in this round.

We're very excited because it means we'll be able to continue to grow School of Everything both in the UK and internationally, helping more people find new things to learn near them.

    Lyrics

Oh Lord, please dont let there be shipwrecks,
Let the lighthouse shine out bright and clear.
But if there needs to be an accident at sea,
Please let that ship be wrecked here.

Theres a path all the way from the clifftop
to the rocks and the sea down below
Its steep and its loose and its slippery
You gotta mind how you go.

On a moonless night, you need a little light

Credit Crunch...is it affecting you too?

I've been teaching for 6 years now and getting busier every year...until October 2008.

As a knitting teacher, Sept-Dec is my busiest time of the year...classes book up up to six weeks in advance. But Oct 08 was like a ghost town for Knitting SOS. My years finances have averaged out pretty healthy due to a couple of big jobs last Spring, but I'm noticing that I can't fill classes as easily as I was 12 months ago.

Has anyone else found this and do they have any suggestions to inspire people to learn?

    Hindustani Music

In Hindustani music, there are 10 main forms of styles of singing and compositions: Dhrupad, Dhamar, Hori, Khayal, Tappa, Chaturang, Ragasagar, Tarana, Sargam and Thumri. Nowadays Ghazals have become very popular as the 'light classical' form of music.

'DRUPAD' is derived from 'Dhruva' meaning fixed and 'pada' meaning words or song and means "the literal rendering of verse into music: songs have a particularly potent impact. Dhrupad is the oldest and perhaps the grandest form of Hindustani vocal music.

    How to eat better

This is a digest (if you'll pardon the pun) of information on the gap between the typical modern Western diet and what our bodies are adapted for. There's certainly a big gap between what I eat and Ran Prieur's recommendations, but there's a lot of food for thought here.

    Science Department Log - 2009 Week 9

What's new under the hood on School of Everything. We have been a bit slow at writing about what we are doing down in the engine room, but this is the beginning of a plan to be a little more vocal. (We have taken the lead from Meetup's release blog.) We'll have a go at getting one of these posts out each week - but I'm not promising anything. Here we go ....

    Driving

Good instructor must have personal skills, abilities, knowledge, understanding, compassion, love for the art of teaching, good eye to spot problems and lots of patience!!!!!!

First and foremost, the driving instructor needs to have teaching ability. The instructor must be able to convey to the student the desired outcome. This means that the driving instructor must be able to describe, explain, and illustrate. Also, the instructor must have the ability to demonstrate what the students are supposed to do, and successfully transfer that information to the learner driver.
