    Sruti and Swara

The difference between Shruti and Swara is clearly described in ancient music literature.

The word Shruti comes from the ancient Sanskrit saying "Shruyate iti shruti", meaning, the sound that is heard and recognized as a 'musical' note by the ear is a Shruti. There are 22 such basic musical notes or Shrutis within a Saptak. When these Shrutis are used for rendering of a specific Raga, the same are termed as 'Swaras'.

What are the precise locations and frequencies of 22 Shrutis?
What are the precise locations and frequencies of 12 Swaras in the Saptak?

    Bacchus Border Morris

We are a Border Morris side based in Croydon, Surrey kitting up in the now traditional rag coat, top hat and our own special disguise to hide us from friends, family and press.

We are looking for dancers and musicans who are looking to experience something new (or not so new) in a fun and social atmosphere (elbow bending exercises anyone?). We practice a couple of times a month in central Croydon, South London.

    March Miscellany for Gardeners

March is just such a wonderful busy time for gardeners and so full of promise for the vegetable grower in particular. Decide what your favourite foods are then resolve to grow them.
I soak large seeds such as broad beans overnight before planting them in recycled yoghurt cups. Salad leaves and herbs often go in the same pot so that they can be cut to order from the kitchen windowsill pots.
But the key to successful croping is a plan of action with a few seeds planted at say fortnightly intervals rather than pouring the whole packet into your first planting.
