    Too much technology

    I've just had a very interesting e-mail exchange with Rowena Young at NESTA about social innovation and social technologies, and particularly the need to reach out beyond the normal early adopter communities into the much larger community of 'non-webbies'. In Rowena's words:

    "We are concerned most with the application of innovation to social change and impact, so novelty gets tempered by what difference it's actually making."

    Becoming a teacher

    This week a couple of friends of mine asked me to teach them how the web works, and the basics of what they'd need to know to commission their own websites. So I found myself in the strange position of being their teacher for the evening. I think I did okay, so here's what I did, and what I learnt:

    1. I asked them what they wanted to learn. (Easy to miss this one.) They basically had enough questions to build a clear map of the lesson, and it meant I could use examples from their lives to illustrate my points.

    Irony

    I realised this week that I have started:

    1) a website to promote curiosity and learning;
    2) a consultancy advising people on harnessing human sociability; and
    3) a campaign to help people be more conscious of how to manage their minds.

    And so now I:

    1) have no time to learn anything;
    2) never see my friends; and
    3) am really stressed.

    The irony of this is not lost on me.

    Work Literacy 08 Online Learning Event

    A very nice discussion and analysis of an online learning community:

    "So what did I learn or what was reinforced?
    * A loose-knit online learning community can scale to many participants and remain effective.
    * Only a small percentage ~10% of members will be active.
    * Wikis need to be extremely focused on real tasks/projects in order to be adopted.
    * If facilitators can seed good questions and provide feedback, then conversations can flourish.
    * Use a very gentle hand in controlling the learners and some will become highly participative.
