    How to make an online business from free (without the ads)

    Blog item: My friends over at ruralnet|online are making tremendous progress in their quest to re-invent their business in the open. As I reported the other day, they face the challenge of moving from a "walled garden" set of online services which they charged for, towards a more distributed system using a mix of tools to provide people engaged in social enterprises and nonprofits with information, communication and collaboration systems.

    Rebuilding your online business in public - Ruralnet

    This is the story of how you can move from a "build it and they (may not) come" approach to online places, to helping people create the places they really want to be on the Net. It involves re-inventing a business in public.

    Some great French films

    I bought a few French films on DVD the other day, all from the fifties and sixties and all superb. I'd recommend them all:

    Le Trou -

    A prison break set in La Santé prison in Paris, most of the actors were not professionals.

    Bob le Flambeur -

    A casino heist. The main character Bob is a very suave, aging gambler.

    Du rififi chez les hommes -
    (also called just 'rififi')

    A gangster film and another heist movie.

    There is some great slang in these films too:

    Inspired teaching - free e-course

    My friend Nick worked on this course with a friend of his who has sadly passed away, but he's made it available now for free in his memory. It includes a PDF guide plus two hours of supporting audio comprising seven easy lessons in how to identify what you know and competently teach it.

    As Nick says, "we would love you to have access to Rick’s material free of charge – with just one condition – please use the material to teach what you have to share."

    Might be of interest to all those "long-time learners, first-time teachers" out there?

    Ukulele heroes

    My friend John and I are going to become YouTube ukulele heroes.

    a) it's easier than starting a band (no drummers); and
    b) we have the perfect blend of competence and incompetence

    Setlist so far includes:
    * No Surprises
    * All Along the Watchtower
    * Two Princes (just need to nail the solo)
    * Brown Eyed Girl

    Now working on:
    * Johnny B. Goode
    * Are You Gonna Go My Way
    * Stairway to Heaven
    * Under the Bridge
    * Ukin' On A Prayer
    * No Whippet, No Cry
    * Black Dog (no, really)
    * Hey Ya

    Suggestions welcome!
