Do you feel that the way you talk or write lets you down?

I can help you.

Through private tuition I can show you how to improve your communication skills and express yourself with confidence and in your own style. If you are a nervous speaker, find conversation difficult or are conscious of your accent I can work with you to help you find your real voice and speak naturally and genuinely.

If you have problems with written work, spelling, grammar, presentation or style I can give you the skills you need to produce good quality work. I can correct any bad habits you have fallen into with written English.

I offer tutoring and coaching in the following subjects:

• Elocution
• Accent Reduction
• Essay Report and Dissertation Writing
• Spelling and Grammar
• Media/Communications Studies
• Interview Skills
• Public Speaking
• Adult Literacy/Numeracy
• Journalism/Writing
• Presentation Writing and Delivery
• Creativity Coaching

This list is not exhaustive - please contact me if you are looking for a subject not listed here. Please note that I do not offer an essay-writing service - I can help you write an essay or dissertation but I can't write it for you.

I normally arrange individual sessions in my clients’ homes or workplace and I am happy to travel anywhere in the North East of England. For this service I charge by the hour: the number of sessions depends on the amount of tuition needed but you can stop any time you like. The first session is free and without obligation.

I was born and educated to secondary level in Essex, but have spent most of my life since then in the North East of England.

I studied English, Latin and Philosophy at Durham University and graduated as a BA with Honours in all three subjects.

I later successfully studied for a Post Graduate Diploma in Public Communications at Leeds Trinity University College. In 2010 I was awarded a Master of Arts Degree in Public Communications from the University of Leeds for my research on how unemployment is portrayed by the media in the North East. I also hold a Certificate in Fundraising Skills from the Northern Council for Further Education.

After an earlier career in customer service in the public sector I became a government press and public relations officer in 1999, a job I held for more than eleven years before deciding to leave the corporate world and go it alone.

I have worked with local, regional, national and international media and built up a huge network of contacts.

As government press and public relations officer I worked mainly for the Department for Work and Pensions but was involved in projects with other organisations including the Ministry of Defence and Buckingham Palace. I was regularly responsible for briefing government ministers and senior managers, arranging ministerial visits and providing training and coaching for junior colleagues. I was also called upon frequently to speak on radio and television and to give presentations to live audiences.

I am a full member of the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR)and a full member of the National Association of Schoolmasters and Union of Women Teachers (NASUWT).

I am also a member of the Senior Common Room at the College of St Hild and St Bede in the University of Durham, a Mentor to a number of Hild Bede students and former secretary of the alumni association of that college.

I work from my home near Durham City.
