Andy Derrick
I have been working for 16 years in many roles across the music industry. These include managing and performing with a number of Jazz and Latin groups in a variety of live music settings. I also work as a freelance orchestral extra player with the CBSO and RLPO in live and recorded engagements. Session work as a trombonist has also made up part of my work including being in the horn section arranging and performing on the Nizlopi album ‘Half these songs are about you’. I have also enjoyed being a part of the multi-award winning Midland Youth Jazz Orchestra and Fat Chops Big Band. In 2005 I was awarded the Best Trombonist prize at the final BBC Big Band Contest before a capacity audience at a concert that was later broadcast on BBC Radio 2. Amongst my portfolio of bands, the ADJQ also recived critical aclaim for its debut album “Fancy Goods"
Working as a composer has seen the premiere of a tuba quartet at the 1st International Tuba & Euphonium Conference as well as a commission for a brass quintet this year. I currently have works published by Warwick Music and Andek Music.
Music Education has been a constant in my work including secondary school teaching, college and university lecturing and private tuition.
From 2006 until 2008 I worked for the Musicians’ Union devising and delivering a series of workshops and seminars aimed at covering essential music industry knowledge as well as providing comprehensive one-to-one support for musicians on music rights, marketing, promotion, web 2.0 and business planning.
I am working now as a freelance music consultant, lecturer, performer, composer and teacher
