Five years ago, I realised that a lot of people, old and young, want to learn to use computers or improve their computer skills, but may not know where to go to gain the skills they need. College or library computer courses may be intimidating and may force students to follow a particular computer course. After teaching my 72-year-old mother how to use a laptop, I decided that it is a lovely thing to open this technical world to people and I wanted to help more people learn these valuable skills.

I set up a drop-in computer skills workshop for a local Age Concern centre. Many older people came to the class with laptops that they were scared to use. My approach was very flexible: I would teach people what they want to learn. Many people wanted to learn how to use the internet: to email or use Skype to communicate with friends and family; to find information about hobbies and areas of interest; to shop online; to watch videos or listen to music. Some people wanted to learn to write letters or make posters. Others wanted to learn how to store documents or digital photographs on their computer. I also ran computer classes for the Salvation Army, and helped many people acquire the computer skills they needed to write CVs and apply for jobs.

However, I learned that many people would rather learn computer skills in the comfort of their own homes rather than attend a class, so this is what I provide. As well as teaching computer skills, I have helped people to get internet and set it up for them, as well as advising on security, printers and many other technical issues.

I have a background in computers and teaching: I have worked as a software engineer and I currently work part-time as computer tutor in a college and in the community for a charity.
