Let us start with a story . . . when I was 12 years old, I was put off singing by a music teacher who made everyone in my class at a West London convent school stand up and sing solo. My throat closed up, nothing came out and I never sang another note in public for more than 50 years. It was the cause of much sadness; I come from a musical family and my late mother sang professionally when she was young. But, in December 2011, I joined a choir whose leader believes that everyone has a voice and that singing is our natural birthright. Now I’m proud to call myself a singer.

I feel much the same about writing and it is the rationale behind my Pen to Paper courses, workshops and mentoring sessions – to encourage more people to bring their inner writer to life.

My students genuinely enjoy and benefit from the way we work together, as this selection of recent comments shows:

'I write for pleasure as well as to support my business, and am just delighted with the changes and increase in my confidence. Diane is a gifted mentor; her sessions are the perfect mixture of encouragement, humour, insight, and nurturing. I particularly find her use of external stimuli to awaken the creativity within helpful, and am always amazed at the breadth of knowledge and understanding which she brings to her sessions to give them such richness.'
AS, Kent; mentoring programme via Skype

'Thank you so much for taking me out of myself and helping to give a new dimension to the business and art of writing.'
DH, Devon; workshop participant

'I don't know when I enjoyed anything so much. You are a terrific teacher, inspiring confidence and leading us (me, certainly) to produce more than I felt capable of.'
MN, Devon; workshop and course participant

'Attending your course has not just changed the way I write, it has changed the way I read too.'
SC, Devon; workshop and course participant

I have a degree in English literature and art history and trained as a teacher but spent most of my working life as a professional copywriter and freelance journalist. From 1989 to 2011, I ran Anima, a communications consultancy, working with some of the UK's leading charities, universities and further education colleges. In 2004 I decided to concentrate on my own writing, joined an inspirational writing course in Somerset and have not looked back; for example, I currently write an award-winning personal blog. However, like Hector in Alan Bennett's The History Boys, I believe in 'passing it on'; so, in 2011, I launched Pen to Paper and started to work with aspiring and novice writers and people who simply wanted to discover and experience the joy of writing.

We may not all be potential Booker prize-winners but we all have the capacity to write. However, many adults who want to write become frustrated by their efforts. Writing is, by its very nature, a solitary business and it is all too easy to become discouraged - but that is where Pen to Paper can help.

When you take part in a Pen to Paper course, workshop or mentoring session, you have the opportunity to explore what and how you write and to discover ways of tapping into the creativity that drives every writer. Creativity is the point at which writing comes to life, so the emphasis is as much on creativity as it is on the written word.

My own teacher training and the many years I spent working with college and university students and staff made me acutely aware of how important it is for people to be able to tell their own stories in a safe and supportive setting. Life writing workshops and courses provide an ideal vehicle for this.

Choose from introductory sessions, weekend workshops, 10-week courses and individual mentoring/creative writing sessions in Mid Devon and West Somerset. Individual writing and mentoring sessions are also available in the comfort of your own home via Skype. Yes, you can study in your pyjamas!

I also run bespoke courses for businesses and other organisations; here the emphasis is on clear communication with clients, customers and staff - using Plain English and ditching the gobbledygook. Contact me for details.

Experience

Copywriter and speechwriter

I was one of the original team who worked on the London Education Partnership Awards; these were set up to celebrate innovative and excellent programmes aimed at encouraging more young people and adults to go on to higher education. The groundbreaking programmes really did change people's horizons and aspirations and, ultimately, their lives. I worked closely with the organisers, sponsors, students, school teachers and university staff at every stage of the awards each year and then told the stories of what they had achieved to the wider world.
