My name is Ella Thompson and i am a piano teacher living and working in Brighton. I am 22 and have a Bmus degree from the University of Birmingham as well as six years teaching experience. I teach from home as well as at Dorothy Stringer School and I am also willing to travel within the local area. I am happy to take on students of any age and i currently teach both very young and mature students, as well as children of school age. I teach students of any ability; from beginners up to grade 8 standard players. As far as my teaching policies go, learning to read music is encouraged, as is good playing technique, and at least a small portion of classical repetoire; this is due to my training as a classical pianist and my study of classical and 20th century music at university. My overall goals are that my pupils enjoy what they play, that they develop an emotional connection with their playing in order to allow them to interpret pieces in their own way, and that they are able to progress in technique, musical understanding and appreciation.

I also teach music theory up to GCSE level, with the aim of improving the knowledge and understanding of those studying music in school. In addition to this i work as an accompanist for music exams and as a sound designer for theatre.

I teach from home as well as at Dorothy Stringer School, but I am happy to travel within the local area for a percentage of pupils.

Other Musical Employment

I have worked as an accompanist, playing for music exams up to grade 8 standard. I offer rehearsal time at the same rates as my teaching and am happy to rehearse from home or to travel within the local area.

I have also done composition and and sound design for the Brighton Young Actors Company and Sound Research and Design for Stillpoint Theatre, working respectively at Upstairs at the Three and Ten, and The Nightingale Theatres. I have also written music for an item at the MA Knitwear Exhibition at Brighton University.

Music Technician and Administrator

Assisting the staff and students in the Music Department at Dorothy Stringer School; a job involving admin, technical support, classroom assistance, playing and accompanying, piano teaching and supervising classroom cover.

My work at Dorothy Stringer has been a great source of personal development for me. I have encountered more learning styles, behaviours and abilities of children than I would have had I solely taught individual piano lessons. I have also worked through many a stressful period and been organised and managed my tasks well.

Some comments from Peter Davison, Head of Music:

Ella is a very fine musician and has taught piano here throughout the year. Her pupils are well motivated and clearly enjoy her lessons. She has had a rigorous training and this is reflected in her piano teaching.

She is a highly intelligent individual who is proactive and motivated. She is efficient with work and has managed the office excellently.

Ella has excellent interpersonal skills and is well liked throughout the school. When someone is as highly regarded as she is, people try to steal her services!

Piano Teacher

I have been teaching piano part time for six years, since before i went to university. The experience of starting young and starting slowly has benefitted my teaching and i have discovered new methods, new priniples and new delights along the way. I am now teaching full time and have the experience and ability to do so.

Comments from Mandy Edwards, parent of a student:

Jules clearly has an aptitude for this instrument and, with Ella's careful tuition, she is clearly developing this over time. Ella has been able to provide her with exactly the right level and pace of tuition; she is systematic and patient, challenging when it is useful to be, yet supportive and understanding.

Ella teaches music theory in a fun and interesting way which has enabled my daughter to read and understand piano music at a competant level. Ella has worked together with Jules to identify the right pieces of music for herto learn, rather than just telling her what to play, which has increased her level of keenness in wanting to learn.

Ella has given me, as a parent, some useful feedback about Jules' progress. She also helped in our piano purchase by giving some sound advice. This has reinforced my confidence and trust in her abilities as a teacher.
