Hello, my name is Helen Nowell and I am a freelance illustrator and art tutor based in Nottingham, England.

In November 2012 I started teaching both art classes and day workshops to adults in a multitude of different disciplines (including portraiture), techniques and media at Artworks. Since then I have privately tutored individuals and have recently begun to teach children’s art classes in drawing and also painting.

My background is in both traditional art and illustration. The Illustration course I studied whilst at University encouraged creative freedom and experimentation. As a result of both the Illustration and traditional practice I am used to working in lots of different media, using different techniques and drawing and painting lots of different subject matter.

My work has been exhibited at D&AD, Loughborough's Fresh Milk Exhibition and at Chatsworth House in Derbyshire. As a result of this exhibition the Duke of Devonshire asked if he could keep one of my pictures for his apartment in London.

Group Classes

Drawing and Painting for children

The aim of the class is to improve upon both drawing and painting skills of class attendants. Clear teaching instructions and guidance will be a focal point of the class to help aid learning.

The class will be run by Helen Nowell, an illustrator from Nottingham. Helen has had work exhibited in London and at Chatsworth House in Derbyshire. Helen has experience running workshops in schools as well as teaching both adults and children.

Character Class - Drawing

You will be advised in how to get started and have a brief refresher in the fundamentals behind portraiture.

In the class we will be exploring how portraiture relates to both caricatures and characters. The class is designed to be fun and exploratory. However if you have had previous experience drawing portraits you may find caricatures easier to grasp than people who have had no prior experience. If you did want to have a go at drawing caricatures rather than characters it is advisable to bring a reference of someone with unique and recognisable features (for example - Obama, Bill Clinton, The Beatles, Bruce Willis, Rocky etc...). Alternatively you may wish to create your own characters.

Please bring with you a rubber, sharper, pencils and either pastels pencils or charcoal sticks if you would like to work in these mediums. A choice of either a murona sheet of paper or cartridge paper will be provided. If you would like to take notes please bring a notebook with you also.

The class will be run by Helen Nowell, an illustrator from Nottingham. Helen has had work exhibited in London and at Chatsworth House in Derbyshire. For more information please phone 0115 9223743 or email [email protected]
