Writing in the House of Dreams

The poet, Ted Hughes, talks about the inner world of imagination, memory and emotion, stories and images, which goes on all the time beneath the surface of our lives ‘like the heart beat.’ We may be aware of it, or we may not; we may become aware of it through dream-recalling or any creative pursuit. Hughes compares this inner world with a pond, saying that if we don’t learn the focus, patience and stealth to break into it ‘our minds lie in us like the fish in the pond of a man who cannot fish.’

Rainer Maria Rilke, in his ‘Letters to a Young Poet,’ says writers must learn to wait ‘with deep humility and patience’ the dawning of clarity about what needs to be written.

This week-end course uses creative dream-work, image-making, visualisation and, of course, lots of writing to help you develop the attitudes of mind you need in order to gain easy access to your inner world whenever you want, so that you might write with confidence and passion, free from fear that you will ever run out of ideas or get blocked.

The course is suitable for everyone from beginner writers to published authors. No previous experience of dream-working or even dream-recalling is necessary, just an open mind and a sense of adventure.

Worlds of Wonder - Writing for children

A fun writing week-end during the course of which we’ll discuss what makes writing for children different from writing for adults, look at what we need to bear in mind when writing for different ages of child and consider current marketing trends and opportunities.
The Hannafore Point Hotel is a very friendly, 3-star, family-run hotel on the beautiful South coast of Cornwall, a minute’s walk from the water’s edge. All course participants will have a room with a sea view and free use of the spa. If you can afford the time, I’d recommend you extend your stay by a night or two and take the chance to explore the pretty ports of Looe and Polperro, or walk the coastal path to Talland with its two cafes. April often gets the best of the weather in Cornwall (though obviously that can’t be guaranteed!)
