Joan Behar
Joan Behar is a writer, editor, and educator. She has been teaching writing for twenty years. When people ask if creative writing can be taught, she dutifully paraphrases Hemingway – writing is 1% inspiration, 99% perspiration – and then redistributes Hemingway’s percentages: 5% magic, 15% inspiration, 85% sweat. Whatever her numerical antics, she believes that writing is a craft, like carpentry. What can be taught is how to use some of the tools of the trade. She also believes that writing, if it’s not to be stillborn, has to be about surprise. If we make no discoveries when we write, and more, if we’re not delighted by those discoveries, why bother?

Services
THE SMALL PRINT
For group classes, I need a minimum of ten students, maximum of twelve. Each class is two hours, and the course runs for ten weeks. Individuals pay £100 for the ten two-hour sessions, which comes to £5 an hour. Full payment for the entire course is made the first session. There are no refunds for classes missed; I'm committed for the ten weeks and I need you to be too.
Workshops and private lessons are negotiated on an individual basis.
