the Fine Art department of the University of Oxford. David
is an artist, writer and photographer who has exhibited in
London, Oxford and New York.

artists catalogues, press-releases and study/funding
applications. Ideal for both art students embarking on
their career and established artists who want to improve
their skills in documenting their work. A friendly and
informative workshop not to be missed. Students will
need to bring a digital camera that allows manual
photography and must be reasonably familiar with using
their cameras.

follows the same principals; i-photo, Photoshop
Elements/Picasa etc), you will be shown how to process
your images to have them ready for the different

PHOTOPOLYMER INTAGLIO
Class Size: 7
The possibilities of Photo Etching, Solar plate and Photo
Collagraphs will be explored during this course. Students
will provide their own source material based on their
personal work and this can be in the form of digital
images, drawings or photographs. A detailed explanation
of what to bring will be provided. The course will cover the
laminating, exposure and development of plates and
etching where appropriate. Also the layering of images
and printing of plates using oil based inks. Some
experience of printmaking is desirable.
ETCHING INTAGLIO PRINTMAKING
Class Size: 7
A contemporary approach to traditional etching(intaglio)
using steel plates etched in Ferric Chloride and Nitric
Acid, in a safe and well controlled way. Modern acrylic
resists will be used, adding a collagraphic element to the
image possibilities. The course will also cover printing in
colour, using more than one plate, and introduce the use
of monoprint techniques with the etched plates. The
course is structured so that with guidance, each student,
is helped to develop their own ideas through process.
MIXED MEDIA, COMBINATION PRINTMAKING
Class Size: 7
This course explores an innovative and experimental
combination of new and traditional Printmaking media.
These will include Monotype, Collagraph with Chine
Colle, Gum Arabic prints and Drypoint. The course will
begin with a series of 1 to 2 day workshops on each
process, building a knowledge base, that will be the
springboard for each students work which will develop
using all or some of the techniques learned. The course is
structured so that, with guidance, students are able to
develop their own ideas by using the combination of
processes appropriate for their work. For those who wish
to be given a starting point, an explanatory brief with the
suggested theme of “Time and Memory” will be provided.
Beginners welcome, but some experience in art
desirable.

images. Intaglio and relief methods of printing in colour
will be explained as well as the use of chine colle.
ETCHED LINO
Class Size: 7
The Etched Linoleum process is an exciting and
unpredictable combination of intaglio mark making and
lino relief printing techniques. Instead of the traditional
cutting of the surface, astrong alkali solution is used to
‘etch’ away the surface so producing images that can
contain expressive brush strokes, fine lines and areas of
granular texture that range from soft to very granular. The
blocks can also be printed intaglio and relief at the same
time with different colours giving a rich satisfying result.
The course will be structured to enable different levels of
experience. Some previous experience of drawing,
painting or sculpture would be desirable. Experience of
printmaking would be ideal.
GUM ARABIC TRANSFER PRINTING - ADVANCED
Class Size: 7
This is an advanced course developing the medium of
gum arabic transfer printing using photocopies of
drawings and photographs. The process is a more
accessible form of lithography which uses the same
principal of a water resist to create a printed image in oil
based ink. During these 4 workshops, students will build
on skills already practiced with a single “plate” printing.
They will be learning how to create colour or tonal
separations using basic photo-shop techniques. The aim
of this course is to produce a range of individual prints in
colour using multiple “plates”.
