Wudang Daoist Disciple Xià Chóngyì is a practicing Daoist and martial arts instructor. As the head instructor at Spring & Autumn Martial Arts, his programs focus on Wudang Wuxue (martial studies including gongfu, taijiquan, etc.) and Daoist Longevity Practices.

Classes are taught in a traditional mannor with individual study and a wide selection of focus material for students to develop their skills through. Wudang Wuxue (Evenings)

This is an easily accessible Wudang martial arts class for all students interested in learning and studying the Wudang arts. As the morning class focuses a full hour on kicking, this class uses an abbreviated kicking set (lead by senior student) for gongfu students, while Taijiquan warm-ups and drilling are provided for Taijiquan students.

Students ages 10-14 are requested to enroll and train with a parent or accompanying adult, while students ages 15 and up are welcome to come to this class along with any of the other Wudang Wuxue classes with their enrollment.

Each student is expected to study at their own rate, and in their own disciplines of choice. Students select from a handful of skillsets and styles (forms) to practice, but must begin at the basic skills to adapt for the Wudang flavor.

Taijiquan students have an additional 40 minutes of group form review following this class.

Wudang Wuxue (Mornings)

There is a saying in China:

"In the north, Shaolin is respected,
In the south, Wudang is revered."

This refers to three particular aspects of Wudang culture: Daoism, Sword, and Taijiquan. Wuxue (武学) refers to the study of martial skill. This class is focused on developing these traditional arts in students of all experiences levels on an individual level. From basic martial arts to advanced principles in Taijiquan and Taiyi skills, this class caters to the individual's needs.

Students are encouraged to come to class as often as possible, and enrollment includes any of our Wudang Wuxue classes, or specialized classes in the Wuxue family (kicking, stances, zhanzhuang, taijiquan, etc. and excluding longevity practices).

This morning class is focused more on drilling and skill development for the individual, while evening sessions are more group oriented. Enrolling with a friend allows more specialized training when working on the same skills or disciplines.

Wudang Kicking Skill (Morning)

This hour long class focuses on the 36 Kicking Methods of Wudang, as described on our website at http://www.springandautumn.com/index.php/wudangshan/wudang-wuxue/36-kicking-methods-of-wudang and is designed for martial artists of all experience levels, and those looking for an alternative to cardio workouts and cardio kickboxing.

This program involves the drilling of many basic kicking techniques for both stretching and self-defense, and builds exceptional core strength and cardio skill. The advanced kicking methods are for those capable of the higher difficulty techniques which students work into including jumping, spinning, and combination kicks.

This is a primary component for those looking to develop high-level gongfu (skill) for martial purposes, no matter the style. This skill teaches speed, timing, coordination, and delivering force with the whole body when striking. Non-martial artists will find increased balance and improved coordination in life.

When combined with the Wudang Standing Postures training (following kicking and prior to the Wudang Wuxue class), a person will find great benefit in their legs, hips, back, and overall strength.

Beach Qigong & Meditation (Morning)

This is a morning longevity program based on our instructor's practice. Everyday, our teacher goes out to the beach near his home and practices traditional Daoist longevity skills to help maintain his health. Taijiquan and Qigong have been salvational in his life, and he hopes to share these benefits with everyone.

This class is approximately one and half hours in length, and begins with stretching and sitting practice. These include a variation of the Eight Piece Brocade Sitting Gong, select practices from the Yun Ji Qi Qian, and Wudang Wuji Taiji Standing Gong. Even though these names may not mean anything to most newcomers, they are accessible by everyone, and each hold a particular series of benefits for the body and the spirt.

Throughout this practice, there are times of meditation, both sitting and standing. These various cultivation techniques are excellent for staying limber and emotionally grounded. Performing these practices facing the water has additional benefits of atmosphere, de-stressing, and reflections in life.

Children under the age of 15 may find difficulty in this program, but are welcome to attend with a parent or accompanying adult.

Those that find difficulty in sitting on the ground are welcome to bring a flat chair to use, and our instructor will provide discussion on modifying the practice those students.

This class is followed by Wudang cardio kicking for those interested in fitness and/or the martial arts.
