The object of this workshop is to inspire children to write stories, and show them how easy it is to turn those stories into a beautiful book. This class teaches children the whole process – from writing and illustrating their stories to folding, binding and cutting the pages. At the end they have a book to keep, beautifully crafted and bound.

I've been writing and telling stories all my life, and my role here is to encourage children to do the same. We can take stories they've dreamed up before, or work on creating new ones. After writing out and illustrating the story on a sheet of A3 paper, I will show how, with a few simple twists, the story transforms magically into an A5 book. The final part of the workshop is learning a simple binding pattern with waxed thread to hold the pages together, cutting the pages, and decorating the cover.

This class can be done for individual kids, small groups, arts and crafts workshops, or parties - just get in touch to discuss it, I'm pretty flexible. All basic materials are provided - paper, card, thread, etc. - but it's good if you have extra materials to make the cover prettier.

I studied creative writing at the University of East Anglia, and went on to work as a travelling storyteller in Spain. Since then I've worked as a teacher and a writer - my fiction has been published in journals such as Dark Mountain and Succour, and my articles in The Guardian, The Economist, New Internationalist and other publications. I also print and bind my own books. I regularly perform original and traditional stories at festivals and storytelling events.

Aimed at: Beginner and Intermediate.
