Nisha Lall
Nisha is a full time Dance Professional based in Sheffield. She set up AIM TO DANCE in 2006 with the aim to provide weekly dance classes to the local community and offereing alternative styles that are not always found in traditional dance schools. To go along with these classes, annual students showcases or a theatre show would allow class members from all classes to get together and demonstrate what they have been learning. Guest dancers from the local community would also be invited to perform to expose students to different dance styles and show the wealth of dance styles in the Sheffield dance community.
Nisha's teaching experience expands further than regular Sheffield classes to community courses, adult education courses, school workshops & clubs, hen parties and workshops at dance and arts events around the UK.
Aswell as being a solo performer, Nisha is the lead choreographer for the ASHAY Dance troupe which she established in 2008. The Troupe specialise in Bellydance, Bollywood, Salsa & Fusion. The Dance Troupe include versatile dancers who work together to keep developing new performance sets in different styles and create innovative Fusion pieces. The troupe perform at regional and national events. The ASHAY Dance Troupe recently performed on BBC Three's Bollywood Carmen.
Nisha is also a dancer for the Tarab Dance Company and toured the UK with their 'Rihla' during 2011/2012.
Nisha also believes it is important to promote Dance in Sheffield and further a field, to help the dance community grow and network better. Nisha volunteers her time, when possible to help promote dance and arts events. She is a committee member of the Chance To Dance organisation who organise 'Chance To Dance', the annual dance day in Sheffield.
Nisha began her training in 2000 at K.DEE.K DanceWorks. In 2005 she qualified as a UKA Salsa and Oriental Dance Instructor and in 2006 completed certified courses in Exercise to Music, Zumba Instruction and Pilates. From 2007-2009 she trained at JWAAD and completed the JWAAD Diploma Course to become a qualified JWAAD Bellydance Teacher. In 2012 she went on to complete a BA (Hons) in Dance Practice (Contemporary Dance).
Her work includes:
- ‘DANCE EVOLUTION’ – A commissioned piece having its premiere at Chance To Dance 2013. This performance showed the wealth of dance styles in Sheffield and how broad it’s dance identity is. The performance explored how different styles complement or contrast each other, but fundamentally showed that our innate attraction to dance as humans makes us the same.
- ‘THE GANGES’ – working along side Balbir Singh in 2012 to create the opening Indian Folk scene for 'Synchronised'.
- THE BEAT 2009 & THE BEAT 2012 – cultural dance shows giving AIM TO DANCE classes members the opportunity to perform in a stage show and invite guest performers from Sheffield and beyond to showcase their talents in all styles of dance.
- Dance routines/Flash Mobs in Bollywood, Salsa and street dance to lead the general public at events such as Chance To Dance Festival, Tramlines and One Billion Rising Awareness Day.
“Dance is my real passion and I believe it is an innate aspect of humans. It is not just about learning a piece of choreography and performing it, it’s about all aspects: the history and culture behind the dance; the technique and style; the major influences of the style; how to develop creativity in the style and how the dance is evolving.”
