Noel Paine was born at Woolwich in 1971. From 1990-91 he studied for a Foundation Diploma in General Art and Design at City & Guilds of London Art School. From 1991-94 he attended the University of Wales, Cardiff graduating with BA (Hons) in Art and Aesthetics, achieving 1 st Class Honours in Painting. In 1998 he completed his Masters degree, being awarded an MA in Fine Art (Painting) from the University of Kent, Canterbury. Since 1994, Noel has had his own studio in London. Initially at the Limehouse Arts Foundation, then with the Barbican Arts Group, followed by the award of a two-year residency with the ACME Arts Group at The Old Fire Station, Gillender Street. Since 2001, Noel has worked from his studio at Trinity Buoy Wharf.
Noel has held various temporary appointments at major London art galleries including Tate Britain, the Hayward Gallery and, currently, the National Gallery. He has also undertaken a variety of posts in education, for both children and adults. These have included appointments as artist-in-residence at three different London primary schools; teaching children with special educational needs at a large West London comprehensive; and visiting arist at an independent co-educational school (ages 4-13) Reading, Berkshire 2000-2007.
Noel is a registered Arts Worker with the London Borough of Bromley and has worked with children of all age groups in schools, colleges, and adult learning centres, including adults registered for support with the MIND charity.
He runs art workshops for children at the Museum of London and for Chiswick Holiday Courses, and been visiting lecturer for the BA (Fine Art) course at the University of Hertfordshire, Hatfield.
He has travelled widely in Europe and the USA. Undertaking an exchange program at The College of Charleston, South Carolina in 1993, and living and working in a studio in Manhattan, New York for 12 months in 1995.
Noel is well acquainted with art collections in London, across Europe and on the East and West Coasts of the USA. This experience of work by American 20 th century painters, and the inspiration he receives from major works exhibited in London, has a continuing influence on the development of his own painting.
Noel currently divides his time between London and Rome.
