Rebecca Whitener
Rebecca is a highly experienced and skilled orchestral, chamber, solo clarinetist and teacher based in Scotland. Rebecca freelances with orchestras including the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Scottish Ballet Orchestra, Manchester Camerata, and Ulster Orchestra, and has worked with many conductors including Valery Gergiev, Charles Dutoit, Gianandrea Noseda, Zubin Mehta, Essa-Pekka Salonen and Sir Colin Davis.
As a soloist and chamber musician, Rebecca has performed in some of the UK’s most prestigious venues, including the Wigmore Hall (London), City Halls (Glasgow), Symphony Hall (Birmingham), and Colston Hall (Bristol). She is a founding member of the Scottish Wind Ensemble, Arctic Winds Wind Quintet, and, the Cameo Clarinet Quartet. Rebecca is a past winner of the Wind Section of the Tunbridge Wells International Young Concert Artists Competition, Symphony Hall Recital Competition and is a recipient of the Silver Medal of the Worshipful Company of Musicians.
Rebecca trained at the Royal Academy of Music and Birmingham Conservatoire with Tim Lines, Angela Malsbury, Richard Addison, Colin Parr and Michael Harris. After graduating with Distinction, Rebecca joined the Southbank Sinfonia, Stuttgart Festival Orchestra and the Verbier Festival Orchestra, with whom she toured Europe and the USA.
As well as performing, Rebecca is passionate about Music Education. She teaches, coaches, adjudicates and conducts, and enjoys inspiring next generation musicians. She has been part of music education projects run by the LSO, SCO Connect, Scottish Ballet, Music in Hospitals and Music Mites (Milton Keynes). Rebecca coaches the clarinets for the Merchant’s Sinfonia and the West of Scotland Schools Concert Band and teaches at the Junior Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, the High School of Glasgow, and East Dunbartonshire Instrumental Music Services, where she also conducts the East Dunbartonshire Schools Wind Band.
