Robin Pearkes
I recently graduated with a BA (First) in Music from Southampton University. Over my time at the University I have picked up lots of live playing experience inside and outside of the Music Department. I am kept on my toes by regularly performing in Originals, Function and Jazz bands with a variety of different musicians from the South. I find the large variety of styles within Pop and Jazz inspiring, and love sharing my insight with constructing lines, rhythmical feel and ensemble techniques with students.
Styles we could look at:
Jazz, Soul/Motown, Hip-hop, Rock, Latin/Afrobeat (Many Varieties), Funk, Reggae/Dub/Ska, Electronica and Pop.
I also develop the students technical ability, giving instruction with regards to technique and then cementing it with exercises. This allows for an unrestricted approach to playing and being creative on the instrument.
Lessons would involve:
Technique.
Theory.
Styles.
Creative playing (Improvising a line).
Ensemble skills.
Improvisation.
Development of a practice routine.
First and foremost, music is a source of enjoyment, and I aim to teach students a set of skills with which one day they can, due to their own understanding and enjoyment, continue to teach themselves. Thus doing myself out of a job. Clever!
