I am an art historian/ art and drama teacher/ assistant potter and generally entranced by the power of the creative arts to move and bring joy to people and to bring them into new personal dimensions.

My outlook has been largely formed by my living in Africa for most of my life and being part of a multi ethnic and multi religious society. I am intensely curious about the why s and wherefores of why things look like they do and what makes up a place' s culture.

Course description:
The aim of this course is to provide learners with a chance to explore some of the landmarks of Art History both through discussion and through practical art work.

The course will provide students with a working knowledge of how to: -
• Analyse a work of art
• Place art in a basic timeline
• Use new approaches to making, based on an understanding of how different artists think and work.

The sessions will start with us examining some key art works, and discussing how they are made and why they look as they do. They will then use different media e.g. drawing, clay, mono print, collage, photography to make their own responses to the art.

The learners will have completed three or more studies by the end of the course. The sessions will take them through an understanding of the Renaissance with reference to the Mona Lisa , looking at the shift to a man centred art, perspective , and portraiture set against previous spiritual( Madonna) painting. Then they will look at the Baroque period, dramatic staging, Rembrandt and explore light and shade in art. They will use Impressionist art to investigate colour and the role that photography has played in the way we see the world. They will retrospectively look at the place that the art of other cultures plays in a wider understanding of the functions of art in society, and finally explore the explosion in perceptions of Art that have occurred in the Twentieth century.

No previous knowledge of art or art history is necessary. All you need are curiosity, bags of enthusiasm and a willingness to learn.

By the end of the course you should be able to...

1. Talk about art with confidence,

2. Understand the basic developments of world art over the last 500 years
