Beyond Patterns
I am interested, if there is demand, in putting together a class or series of classes in some of the neglected aspects of salsa.
* Playing with the rhythm
* Character
* Partner Connection
* Musical Interpretation (the song as a story)
Rhythm and Timing
This class (delivered along with Encuentro Latino) can be a single 1-hour class or a series of half-hour classes teaching the basic Conga, Clave, Bongo, and Timbales parts of the rhythm. The package involves live percussion on real instruments, participatory exercises, and dancing the basic step on 1 and on 2.
Students gain:
* Improved ability to hear the "1"
* Insight into how the rhythms are constructed and what is involved in making salsa music
* Encouragement to listen more actively to music (leading to more expressive dance)
* Dispelling of the "clave" myth
* Fun!
Absolute Beginners
At beginners' level, the focus is on having fun, the basic steps and a few simple moves. I get students leading and following from the outset to stand them in good stead as the salsa addiction takes hold! There's a little bit of talk about the music and the history of salsa but not too much!
Experience
Rhythm and Timing
Developed a one-hour "Rhythm and timing" workshop with Encuentro Latino teaching the very basics of salsa percussion and how to relate to them as a dancer.
Teaching
Began social dancing on 2 and took classes with Nicky & Gormack. Encuentro Latino switched to completely On 2 classes. Registered as "Old York Salsa" and began teaching beginner classes around rural Yorkshire, also corporate gigs, weddings and hen nights!
Learning
Learned Salsa on 1 with Laucinda Holland (before she founded Encuentro Latino) and with Nicolai & Helena. What was then known as "Cross Body Style" a fusion of Cuban and L.A. repertoire. Later began to move towards a New York Style influence.
