I watch hours of telly each day. But I was once told that I'm allowed to watch anything I like as I'm productive at the same time.
Just to explain...I'm a knitter. It's what I do for a living. But once the pattern writing bit is done, there are hours of repetitive knitting, during which I need to be kept entertained and awake.
I know lots of knitters who listen to the radio, but I need something to look at - I'm one of those annoying knitters who can watch subtitled films whilst knitting (sorry!)
Also, I live alone and work alone most of the time...telly is a bit of company. I don't always pay attention to it, but it's there when I need it.
And it's educational! If you stay away from Channel 5 that is... ; )
I'm a huge fan of documentaries and have recently seen (amongst others) 6 hours of documentaries about Auschwitz, a series about the planet Earth, a series of programmes about the American presidency and many hours of indulgent property-porn. So despite my lifelong addiction to Eastenders, there's also some useful information filtering into my brain.
Yet again and again I hear from people who tell me they don't own a telly or they've gotten rid of their tv. It makes me feel very low-brow! I have no idea why tv has been vilified to such an extent.
Please don't judge me. I read for several hours a day, I go out, I work, and do all the 'normal' things, but also (rare in my circle) I love telly!
I'd be interested to hear more opinions on this subject. What's your favourite tv programme?

I've reached the point where TV is no longer a regular feature of my life - either in the "It's Tuesday night, I must get home for Shameless" way or in the "Got home, knackered, slump in front of the TV" way. But that doesn't mean I never watch it. In fact, I think I've become a "recreational" TV user... Last night I watched two episodes of Around the World in 80 Faiths back-to-back and really enjoyed it - especially the one on India, with graveyard-dwelling Augures and Naths holding hot coals in their mouths. Fascinating!
I eventually got rid of my TV. After paying the license fees all of last year, but only turning it on to watch the US elections, I decided it was just not worth having.
I simply have not found any time to watch. I never made a real choice to stop watching, I just never got around to it.
Adverts do irritate me though, I think I just loose interest when they come on. I have ended up watching a few shows via torrent, but that is pretty irregular.
I've seen some of that Around the World series. It's pretty good.
So what do you do when you're at home and not eating/sleeping/doing laundry? Or do you live with such interesting people that you don't need the simple company of telly?
I think that a mixture of being a knitter, working alone and living alone is why I watch so much tv. But it's company and keeps me sane.
Eastenders forever,

Hi - I'm a knitter too and it's given me a great excuse to watch whilst producing something at the end of whatever it is I'm watching. I really love BBC4 at the moment, particularly the motoring series they did about caravans and the Rolls Royces programme on India. I'm also a bit of a Shameless fan and all the US series although I think DH has gone off a bit. Now, the more I watch TV, the more I knit, the less guilt I have!
My telly viewing is much the same as Dougald's although I do sometimes have it on whilst cooking or eating.
There are still some great programmes but I don't organise my days so as to be able to watch them.
I love films though but tend to consider films/TV as very different things. If anything I've swapped the -not quite watching but it's on- telly watching for -not quite concentrating digg.com type- internet surfing.
TV and films are definitely different things. But I still prefer to watch a film on my telly rather than go to the cinema. It's too dark to knit in the cinema, and I really can't sit still through a whole film without wanting to get up, have a wander, look in the fridge, etc. I can't seem to get a cinema to pause for me.
i barely watch any TV. I prefer to put on the head phones and do something. Such as the washing, paperwork, cleaning etc. Really the only Tv i watch is the world football/soccer.
I watch TV very rarely. I prefer to listen to music most of the time.Only programme i prefer to watch is cricket match when my favorite team is playing.
I prefer to listen to music, too. I just watch the news in TV.
