Experienced Guitar Teacher offering Professional Guitar Tuition online world wide or face to face in Brighton & Hove
My name's Ben Cox-Smith, I am a professional Guitar player and music teacher in Brighton, I am currently offering courses in Flamenco, Fingerstyle, Acoustic, Electric, Slide or Dobro Guitar (flamenco, fingerstyle, ragtime, blues, slide, lap slide, folk, rock, metal) for pupils seeking one-to-one or group lessons.
I have 30 years playing experience, 20 years teaching experience and 20+ years experience performing across the UK in a plethora of flamenco, folk, grunge and ragtime groups as well as solo blues, fingerstyle, classical and flamenco performances at private and public functions and studio session work.
I believe repertoire, the ability to produce varied and interesting accompaniment and effective practice are the most important aspects of a musician's arsenal and, from the very beginning, teach guitar and music theory catering to the music tastes of the pupil, be it Rock, acoustic, folk, metal, fingerstyle, classical or slide
I offer beginner, intermediate and courses in flamenco, fingerstyle, ragtime, slide, dobro and general song writing accompaniment. These involve a more concise look at:
• Improvisation & Understanding of Musical Conversation
• Ear Training to help you Learn to intuitively play what's in your head
• Harmony & Theory (Understanding music as a language)
•Technique & Dexterity (providing the skills to perform advance styles as well as effective practice technique to advance as quickly as possible)
- Arrangement and accompaniment for songwriting and how to avoid getting stuck in one way of writing and/or playing
Specific flamenco courses typically cover:
- Fundamental general guitar and specific flamenco techniques.
- The compas (distinctive rhythm) and melodic motifs of each major palo (flamenco form).
- Falsetas (melodic guitar 'solos').
- Accompaniment of singing and dancing as well as the structure of each palo (form).
- Flamenco guitar for solo playing.
- Terminology and language.
- Popular songs and artists e.g. Ketama, Gypsy Kings etc.

Ideally students should practice at least 30 minutes a day, however, in reality, life can get in the way and even 10 minutes of effective practice is worth literally hours of ineffective practice. Bad practice technique is why a lot of guitarists feel 'stuck in a rut' and don't understand why their playing seems to have stagnated, or why it's taking so long to see results. For this reason, effective practice technique is one of the most important areas I teach and, if done correctly, you'll be astonished at the progress you can make in a very short time from 30 minutes per day!
