Carl Wallis BA (Hons)

I am an enthusiastic guitar/ trumpet teacher. I have had teaching experience of over 5 years teaching guitar and trumpet to both children and adults including those with disabilities such as autism and learning difficulties. I have also had experience working in schools. I am a professional working musician and have been performing and composing for for over 16 years.

I began playing trumpet at an early age and progressed through to grade 8 at the age of 15. I believe my fundamental background in classical music has much helped me with my teaching and knowledge of music as a whole. I have played trumpet in a variety of ensemble settings including orchestral and function work. I can cater to both those who wish to learn through Associated Board Grades 1 to 8 and those who want to learn popular styles such as jazz and improvisation.

While exploring other areas of trumpet playing such as jazz and modes I took up guitar in my early teens. I studied both electric and classical guitar which improved my knowledge of the instrument with an emphasis on technical players such as Yngwie Malmsteen and Joe Satriani. I was able to use my knowledge from trumpet playing to build upon modal solo ideas and use of melodic phrasing. I can teach rock school grades 1 to 8 or those wishing to brush up on particular styles ranging from complex 80s 'shred' guitar to the effective simplicity of bands such as Nirvana and Oasis. I combined guitar with trumpet and composition for my degree at Leeds College of Music and continue to have equal enthusiasm for both.

I broadened my horizon to composition while at University and began songwriting and composing in a variety of styles and have recently received airplay from BBC Radio Sheffield. To those who wish to study composition I can teach you how to write and record your own songs/ material to a high standard with much experience using software such as Logic Pro. I can help you develop and execute ideas and give you advice on what works well within the industry with relevant production techniques.

I always cater to the needs of each individual student and work specifically at their rate to achieve maximum progress. I enjoy passing on knowledge to students and learn as much from them as they do me. I offer a half price introductory lesson to students considering studying with me and can also make home visits for an additional charge.
