Emma Jackson

I offer a range of textiles orientated courses, offering 'off-the-shelf' courses and tailored workshops for individuals, groups, for pleasure or as part of a programme of professional development. Previous clients include embroiders' guilds, youth groups, community arts projects, pupils with special needs, primary school and sixth form art & Textiles students.
Workshops include applying, combining and developing specific techniques (batik, screenprinting, paper making (pulp & silk), machine embroidery, hand dyeing and feltmaking and developing design skills.
My personal practise is focused on Feltmaking working as a Designer Maker. I use traditional and contemporary feltmaking techniques to create felted texiltes for interiors and to wear. I utilize the memory of wool to explore the fibres' potential to form sculptural, textured and rasied surfaces. Inspired by organic forms and patterns my works has distinctive colours, shapes & textures. I manupilate the wool with stitch, nuno and shibori to achieve permenant shapes and patterns which echo my sources of inspiration.

Expressive Screenprinting
Explore the process of creating screenprint designs using stencil and breakdown techniques by experimenting with print paste and thickened dyes to create your own unique experimental textiles.
The Experimental Screenprinting course will involve learning how to
• work with Manutex & Procion dyes to make thickened print paste & dyes
• print using stencils
• cure your print designs.
• create Breakdown prints
What is breakdown screenprinting? Creating a screen covered with thickened print paste and dye which is allowed to dry and then printed off with clear print paste or a dye/paste combination. While printing, the dried on dye on the screen gradually dissolves (breaksdown), printing an evolving array of colours, textures, marks and disintegrating effects. Initially this process generates negatives images which then become positive images.
Bring along any design source material or images to inspire your design and let the creative magic unfold...
Hand Felted Sculptural Vessels

Breakdown Screenprinting
Experiment with this exciting technique using thickening dyes and print paste to build marks and textures, then break down the dried screen to create an array of colours, organic textures, and distressed, disintegrating effects. On this weekend workshop, day one will involve creating your screens by building the screen surface with dyes, textures and objects in preparation for printing the screens developed on day two.
