Jeff started dancing Argentine Tango in 1999 taking workshops with many of the tango maestros including Carlos Gavito, Fabian Salas, Gustavo Naveira and Andrea Misse & Javier Rodrigues.

Since these early days his style of dancing has been more influenced by teachers such as Melina Sedo & Detlef Engel, Eric Jorissen, Carol Beauxis & Bernard Casasreales and Carlitos Espinoza & Noelia Hertado.

Together with Sari Lievonen Jeff studied Canyengue primarily with Arjan Sikking & Marianne Van Berlo.

Jeff is a graduate of the Tango teacher training programme organised by maestros Melina Sedo & Detlef Engel.

Jeff has been a driving force in the developing Glasgow Tango community. As well as working with Sari and the Glasgow Tango Studio Jeff was the co-founder of Glasgow's first weekly milonga, that is still running on a Wednesday evening.

Jeff is Glasgow Tango Studio's resident DJ having played at various Tango events for over a decade.
Many years of dancing and teaching have deepened his understanding and appreciation for traditional Tango music.

Milonguero Style Tango

Milonguero Style Tango

Dancing in close embrace without opening. This is a form of social Argentine Tango uniquely suited to small or popular i.e.. crowded dance floors. the style is characteristic in dancing the rhythm with complex use of cross system as well as unique figures. It is perhaps the loveliest way to dance Tango.

You will learn close embrace social dancing in our group classes, but to work specifically on Milonguero style Tango we suggest one to one tuition with either Sari or Jeff.

Milonguero is not easy it is a lovely way to dance tango but requires a refined disciplined esthetic and good technique coupled with understanding of the music or at least the Rhythmical structure, this takes time and practice to achieve, but this way of dancing may
be the essence of Argentinean tango?

Our Tango Experience

About the teachers

Sari Lievonen (MFA, MA, Pedagogic Diploma) is a versatile performer/choreographer/dance teacher and visual artist who has worked as a dance professional in theatre and contemporary dance since 1987 and as a visual artist since 1999.
Sari was first drawn to tango while studying dance in Paris in the late 1980’s.
She collaborated extensively in the 1990’s with Camus Nova, the first Finnish ensemble to play Astor Piazzolla’s music in Finland.
Sari has been part of the Glasgow tango scene since 2002. She is the Creative Director for the Glasgow Tango Festival, which was founded in 2006. She is also currently working as an Artist in Residence at the Department of Theology and Religious Studies at the University of Glasgow funded by the Leverhulme Trust.

Jeff Allan has been dancing Tango for the past ten years. Absorbing the influence of many teachers during this time, he is predominately interested in the social tango dance, and at present the Salon & the Close Embrace (Milonguero) styles.
Jeff has partnered Sari in teaching and performance for the past three years.
Sari & Jeff have been featured in the Edinburgh Hogmany “The Dancin” Show, the Glasgow Subway Festival and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
They have also participated in the Glasgow International (GI) with their interactive tango performance project.
Over the years Jeff has been a core mover in Glasgow’s developing tango scene. He was co-founder of Glasgow’s first weekly milonga (Tango social dance), the Wednesday Tango Bar. He established the weekly practica in 2005 and has been running this popular weekly event with Sari since them.
The idea to organize a Tango Festival for Glasgow came also from Jeff’, and he has been a core member of Tango in the City to make this festival a reality.
Sari & Jeff have been running the CCA milonga since 2007.
