Diploma in Saxophone Teaching (Univ. of Sunderland), B.Sc., Cert. Ed.

I'm a specialist saxophone teacher with many years experience teaching adults and children in a wide variety of contexts. I have been involved in education throughout my working life, including spells at the Universities of Durham and Teesside, East Durham Community College, various schools and, more recently, one-to-one music tuition.

I encourage students to play in a variety of styles and to become proficient both at reading music and improvising. Theory of music is taught as it becomes relevant to the music being played.

Private tuition is at my home in West Rainton, Durham - on the Durham to Sunderland road - and I restrict my teaching days to Tuesdays and Wednesdays (because of other commitments).

Making music should be fun and is best done with other musicians so I encourage participation in other projects wherever possible.

I work in a ceilidh band (Tin Roof) and a couple of jazz ensembles which, hopefully, informs my teaching as well as my playing.
