Group Classes

Over 50s and beginners

A yoga class in East Finchley, specifically aimed at people over 50 and beginners.

The class is on a Wednesday at 9.45 at The Iyengar Yoga Studio. The studio opened 4 years ago and is one of East Finchley's hidden gems, nestled in the side streets of East Finchley, quietly attracting people from all walks of life.

The class on Wednesday morning is geared towards people who have never tried yoga before but may wish to try it, and people in their later years. Lisa Morris, really enjoys working to improve the students' strength, co-ordination, flexibility and stamina. She says ' I myself have felt the benefit of working through my injuries, aches and pains, both physical and emotional through yoga. It helps me to understand some of the ailments that people come to class with. I hope to be able to share the amazing benefits of yoga with everyone, which is why I have specifically tailored this class to over 50s and total beginners.'

"The Wednesday students are so friendly and always meet after class at a local coffee shop to chat and catch up with their news, they are so supportive of each other."

Students love the airy feel of the purpose built yoga studio which is wonderfully equipped with lots of props to help everyone acheive the postures. All the teachers at the studio are trained and experienced to the rigorous Iyengar training level.

Iyengar Yoga in Bushey

Yoga is one of the oldest systems of personal development in the world. This system of balancing the body, mind and spirit was formulated by ancient yogis, who understood man's essential nature and realised a way to utilise all of man's inner resources to live in harmony with himself and the environment.

Pupils learn through a carefully graded and systematic programme of asana (posture). Pranayama (breath control) is gradually introduced once students have a firm foundation of yoga practise.

Yoga practise both relaxes and energizes the body and mind and brings vitality, flexibility, strength, concentration, self-confidence and mental calm. Yoga is suitable for all types of people and all levels of fitness.
Practising Yoga helps you overcome and prevent many stresses, strains, aches and pains. It promotes a firm foundation for health and well-being.

Teaching system
The system of teaching is methodical and progressive, emphasising detailed correctness and absolute safety. When necessary, it uses supports called “props” that allow students to progress in their practice of postures safely at their own pace, to suit their body.

Beginners work in a basic way on simple postures according to their capabilities. As they develop they then move on to more refined ways of working as well as to more complex postures.
In order to ensure a high quality of teaching, all certified Iyengar teachers have undergone rigorous training and assessment.

Experience

Iyengar yoga teacher

I have taught Iyengar Yoga to people from all walks of life and of all ages.

Some classes I teach are suitable for the over 50 age range as they are more gentle and cater specifically for more mature students. In these classes I am amazed by the students who range from below 50 up to their 80's.

Some classes I teach have men and women of all ages, shapes and sizes. I always try to get the best from the students whatever your level of ability, flexibility and stiffness.

Everyone can improve their alignment and body understanding, which in turn can lead to greater emotional stability and self awareness. Although the spiritual aspects are minimal in class, the benefits come in time with regular practise.

Most classes have people with a broad range of ages and abilities. My aim is to challenge all the students whilst allowing everyone to work at their own pace.

In the Iyengar technique, props can be used to assist all the students in their understanding of their bodies, and to be able to achieve the postures better. We hold the postures for a while, aiming to get the best alignment and understanding in each posture.

Everybody can benefit form the Iyengar technique, from beginner, through to more experienced students. This technique works towards full body alignment.

Please contact me for further Information if you think you may like to try to come along to class.
