I read English and European Literature at the University of Essex and have since done a number of different courses including an Introductory TEFL Certificate, a Diploma in Teaching English as a Foreign Language, a Diploma in Freelance and Feature Writing and a Certificate in Short Story writing. I have also studied Japanese to a high level and have passed Level 2 of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test.

I have been teaching English for about 17 years and have worked in several countries including Italy, Japan and Australia. I am the director of a small teaching company, English Etcetera which specialises in theme based English lessons (www.englishetcetera.com).
My students range from young children to business people and Premiership footballers and I have recently been tutoring children for the 11+ and 13+ exams.
I feel I am a gentle, supportive teacher who tries to encourage my students as much as possible, helping them to achieve their potential.
In my free time I translate Japanese films and write short stories. I'm a published writer and have won several writing competitions.
I love the English language and hope I can share my passion with you.

Experience

English tutor/teacher, university lecturer

Having taught English for seventeen years, I have gained a lot of experience and knowledge of the language in addition to confidence and useful skills. I have taught a wide range of levels, nationalities and personalities and as a result feel very qualified to tailor make a course suitable for any particular person. I have also taught many group courses for both children and adults.
With regard to my personal characteristics, I feel I am a warm, supportive teacher and a good listener. I try to praise and encourage my students to achieve their potential.
As I have travelled extensively and have many different interests, I feel this helps me to create interesting, stimulating lessons.
As I can speak Japanese to a fluent level and am currently studying Italian, I am aware of the difficulties and challenges involved in learning another language and I think this helps me when teaching.
