I first started Aikido in 1972 in Leicester but began more regular, sustained training in 1974 when I moved to the North East of England where I was born. Former member of the European Aikido Union under Andre Nocquet Sensei and later the British Aikido Federation under Kanetsuka Shihan, I am now a senior instructor in the Komyokan Aikido Association under Terry Ezra Shihan, 7th dan.
My current grade of 5th dan was awarded to me in 2007 by Moriteru Ueshiba the current head of Aikido at the Aikikai Headquarters in Tokyo, Japan.
I live and teach in a converted chapel in the village of Leeholme near Bishop Auckland in Co. Durham.
I conduct regular training on evenings and weekends and I provide private tuition by arrangement.
I am also a qualified acupuncturist and author of the book 'Aikido, Iron Balls and Elbow Power - the Teachings of Alex Essani'.
