Rag Morris has acquired its own inimitable style over the last 27 years – free-spirited, energetic, colourful, comic, and very rarely normal.

We wear brilliantly coloured rag shirts and bells, inspired by the traditional costume of the Welsh Borders. Our dances come from the Cotswold Hills and the Welsh Borders.

We dance with sticks, hankies, bare hands, and occasionally plastic chickens, to the accompaniment of accordions, melodeons, fiddles, whistles, and drums, and with the assistance of our trusty steed, Rags the Horse.

Our Folk Club holds regular sessions and occasional ceilidhs, and organises trips to festivals and gigs both locally and further afield. New musicians, singers, and hangers-on are always welcome.

Rag Morris is a society of the University of Bristol Union, but membership is open to all.

Group Classes

Folk Club regular Monday session

Our Folk Club, consisting partly of Rag Morris musicians, meets most Mondays for a friendly music and singing session in the Ship Inn, near Christmas Steps. If you're planning to join us, either to play or to listen, do check first with [email protected] that we'll be there.

Rag Morris regular Thursday practice

Rag Morris holds regular dance workshops on most Thursdays during termtime. Beginners are always welcome! These practices are also for musicians wanting to play for dancing, and sheet music is available. If you're planning to drop by one Thursday, check first with [email protected] that there's a practice on that week; we sometimes dance at local pubs and other venues, especially during the Summer term.
